NZ Rugby Player Dies After Unsurvivable Injury

A New Zealand rugby player has tragically passed away after sustaining an injury described as 'unsurvivable' during his team's opening game of the season. Eugene Hanna, 30, was a member of the Glenora Bears Premier Reserves squad in Auckland. He suffered the injury on May 2 and spent 10 days in hospital before dying on Tuesday, May 12.

Details of the Incident

The exact nature of the injury has not been disclosed, but the club confirmed it was 'unsurvivable.' Hanna was playing in the team's first match of the season against Te Atatu when the incident occurred. The New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) released a statement highlighting the importance of safety protocols, particularly regarding head injuries and concussions.

'This is truly heartbreaking and something we never want to see happen,' the NZRL statement read. 'We are currently working alongside Auckland Rugby League, his club, and other appropriate people. NZRL places the utmost importance on player safety and welfare and work hard to prevent such tragic outcomes. We have rigorous head injury and concussion protocols in place and work with our rugby league community to ensure appropriate resources and education are provided year-round.'

The statement urged anyone who sustains a head injury or experiences symptoms to follow guidelines, seek medical advice, and only return to play when appropriate.

Tributes Pour In

Glenora Bears chairwoman Janet Hunt expressed deep sorrow in a Facebook post: 'Eugene was a valued player in our Premier Reserves squad, and although a new Bears member, he had good friends within the club. Eugene sustained an injury in the team's first game of the season against Te Atatu, which was tragically unsurvivable. To his family, friends, and teammates, we extend our sincere condolences. There are not enough words to express the unimaginable loss and grief you are feeling at this time. Forever in our hearts.'

Hanna also played football for Renegades FC in the New Zealand Christian Football League. The club paid tribute on Instagram, describing him as 'the heartbeat of Renegades,' 'the biggest character,' 'a brilliant player, but most importantly, the kindest person.'

The rugby community continues to mourn the loss of a player remembered for his kindness and passion for sport.
