Independent Journalists Recognised in Prestigious 2026 Press Awards Shortlist
Three distinguished journalists from The Independent have been shortlisted for the highly regarded Press Awards 2026, marking a significant achievement for the publication. The annual ceremony, held in London, celebrates excellence in British national journalism, with The Independent securing nominations across four distinct categories this year.
A Legacy of Excellence in Journalism
Now in its 64th year, the Press Awards are judged by a panel of academics, editors, journalists, and other industry professionals, maintaining their status as one of the most important recognitions for UK news organisations. The awards highlight outstanding contributions to journalism, underscoring the vital role of rigorous reporting in today's media landscape.
Meet the Shortlisted Journalists
The Independent's nominees include health correspondent Rebecca Thomas, who is in the running for Health Journalist of the Year. Thomas, who won in this category last year, continues to deliver impactful exclusives that delve deep into the challenges facing Britain's healthcare system. Judges have previously praised her extensive contacts across all levels of the health service, enabling her to uncover truths behind official narratives as hospitals grapple with mounting pressures.
Chief international correspondent Bel Trew is shortlisted for Foreign Reporter of the Year. With a career covering the Middle East since 2011, as well as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Trump administration's ICE operations in Minneapolis, Trew has previously won this award. Her work is noted for its bravery, often involving reporting from perilous conflict zones, shedding light on underreported stories, and challenging harmful stereotypes.
Global travel editor Annabel Grossman is nominated for Travel Journalist of the Year. Promoted to her role in 2023, Grossman focuses on adventure travel, producing compelling reports on topics such as skiing in Japan's lesser-known resorts, avoiding crowds on Italian holidays, and optimal road trips across the United States.
Campaign Recognition for Social Impact
In addition to individual accolades, The Independent has been shortlisted for Campaign of the Year for its Brick by Brick initiative. This campaign, in partnership with the charity Refuge, has successfully built two new safe homes for domestic abuse survivors, providing refuge from fear and violence. The initiative has garnered high-profile support, including endorsements from the Queen and celebrities such as Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Olivia Colman.
The shortlist reflects The Independent's commitment to impactful journalism across diverse fields, from health and international affairs to travel and social advocacy. As the awards ceremony approaches, these nominations underscore the publication's role in delivering news that matters, with journalists who go above and beyond to inform and inspire the public.
