MAGA Figures Defend Minneapolis Shooting as Senator Mullin Labels Victim 'Deranged'
MAGA Defends Minneapolis Shooting as Mullin Calls Victim 'Deranged'

In the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Minneapolis ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents, prominent MAGA-aligned figures have launched a concerted defence of the incident across social media and sympathetic media outlets. The public relations effort began swiftly on Saturday, mere hours after Pretti was killed and only seventeen days following the shooting death of Renee Good in the same city.

Contradictory Evidence Emerges from Shooting Scene

The Department of Homeland Security has maintained that the victim arrived on the streets with the intention to "massacre" law enforcement officers. However, a Washington Post analysis of video footage from the scene presents a starkly different account. The analysis indicates that ICE agents subdued the Illinois-native, holding him to the ground, and removed a firearm from a holster positioned near his back. Crucially, after securing the weapon, agents then proceeded to shoot Pretti multiple times, resulting in his death.

Senator Mullin's Unsubstantiated Claims on National Television

Despite the availability of this video evidence, Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin appeared on Fox News to label Pretti a "deranged individual." Mullin asserted, "A deranged individual who came in to cause massive damage with a loaded pistol was shot and killed. How much more does it have to go on before the Democrat leaders take responsibility for their words?" The senator offered no evidence to support his claim that Pretti intended to cause damage.

Adding to the official narrative, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told Fox News that carrying a registered firearm without proper ID is an offense in Minnesota, punishable by a fine of up to $25. "He came to that scene and impeded a law enforcement operation, which is against federal law. It's a felony. He became aggressive and resisted them throughout that process," Noem stated.

MAGA Commentators Draw Controversial Parallels and Double Standards

The highly influential right-wing social media account, Catturd, dismissed Pretti's profession as a nurse who worked with veterans by invoking notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, who was a medical specialist and army veteran. "Liberal media ... 'He was a nurse!' Yeah, and Jeffrey Dahmer was a medical specialist in the army. What's your point?" the account wrote on Truth Social.

MAGA commentator Mark Levin questioned why Pretti possessed a gun in a situation where police operations and potential unrest were anticipated. This stance contrasts sharply with Levin's previous praise for Kyle Rittenhouse, who brought a larger firearm into a scenario where law enforcement clashed with protesters. Levin had described Rittenhouse as "absolutely outstanding" for self-defence in 2021.

Levin further blamed Democratic officials, writing, "None of this would be going on but for the intentional acts of sabotage by local and state Democrat officials who are not only obstructing federal law enforcement but urging on the mobs and inciting violence with the most toxic demagoguery and propaganda."

Official Responses and Legal Analysis

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told ABC’s Jonathan Karl on This Week, “I'm sorry he is dead, but he did bring a semiautomatic weapon to what was supposed to be a peaceful protest.” When Karl noted there was no evidence the victim brandished the gun, Bessent insisted, “But he brought a gun!” Karl countered, “We do have a Second Amendment in this country.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Cherkasky, former lead prosecutor for the Air Force’s Special Victims Unit, suggested Pretti had a "death wish." Appearing on Fox News, Cherkasky likened the death to suicide by cop, stating, “Based on the reports we are hearing in the videos we see, this appears to be essentially a suicide by cop type of scenario. It has long been known if you’re going to fight with cops and resist in situations that are escalating like this it is a death wish.”

The rapid and coordinated defence from MAGA circles highlights the deeply partisan nature of the response to this lethal incident, raising significant questions about accountability and narrative control in the wake of police-involved shootings.
