Ronnie O'Sullivan has demonstrated his commitment to growing snooker through his support for rising stars Zhao Xintong and Wu Yize. The 50-year-old, widely regarded as the greatest player in snooker history with a record 41 ranking titles, has become a key mentor for the next generation.
After losing to Zhao in last year's World Snooker Championship semi-final, O'Sullivan revealed the help he has consistently offered the Chinese player. 'I know we've got a really nice relationship, I'm always trying to help him if I can,' O'Sullivan said. Zhao, who went on to win the title, described O'Sullivan as his idol and admitted he initially did not want to win the match, hoping to see the legend capture an eighth world title.
O'Sullivan's influence has also extended to Wu Yize, who qualified for the World Snooker Championship semi-finals for the first time this year. Wu thanked O'Sullivan for his support, revealing they practised together before he won the International Championship last year. O'Sullivan offered advice on areas to improve, emphasising the importance of being able to 'play OK and win' rather than relying solely on brilliant play.
Wu has heeded that advice, currently battling Mark Allen for a place in the Crucible final, while Zhao was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Shaun Murphy. O'Sullivan's mentorship highlights his dedication to the sport's future.
