Starmer Defends UK-US Ties Amid Trump Criticism Over Iran Base Refusal
Starmer: UK-US Relationship Not About 'Hanging on Trump's Words'

Starmer Insists UK-US Alliance Transcends Trump's Personal Attacks

Sir Keir Starmer has firmly stated that the United Kingdom's special relationship with the United States does not depend on "hanging on to President Trump's latest words," following a series of personal criticisms from the American leader. The Prime Minister's remarks come in response to Donald Trump's vocal disapproval of Sir Keir's initial decision to deny the US access to British military bases for launching strikes against Iran.

Trump's Criticism and Starmer's Defence

Mr Trump openly criticised Sir Keir after the UK leader refused to permit American forces to use British bases, including Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, for an opening assault on Tehran. In a pointed remark, Trump declared, "this is not Winston Churchill that we're dealing with," highlighting his dissatisfaction with the UK's stance.

However, Sir Keir defended his position during Prime Minister's Questions, emphasising that his refusal was based on legal and strategic grounds. He told MPs, "What I was not prepared to do on Saturday was for the UK to join a war unless I was satisfied there was a lawful basis and a viable, thought-through plan. That remains my position." He added that the entire nation is concerned about potential escalation in the Middle East, urging action with "clarity, purpose, and a cool head."

Military Cooperation Continues Despite Tensions

Despite the initial refusal, Sir Keir has since authorised the US to use British bases for limited operations targeting Iranian missile launchers and infrastructure, though RAF jets have not been involved in direct strikes. He clarified, "The protection of UK nationals is our number one priority. We're taking action to reduce the threat with planes in the sky in the region intercepting incoming strikes, deploying more capability to Cyprus, and allowing US planes to use UK bases to take out Iran's capability to strike."

Western officials confirmed on Wednesday that US bombers have not yet utilised Diego Garcia or Fairford, but the UK is prepared to host them, with arrivals expected in the coming days. Sir Keir underscored that military and intelligence cooperation with the US remains robust, stating, "American planes are operating out of British bases. That is the special relationship in action. British jets are shooting down drones and missiles to protect American lives in the Middle East on our joint bases. That is the special relationship in action. Sharing intelligence every day to keep our people safe. That is the special relationship in action."

Regional Security Measures and Criticisms

The government has faced criticism for insufficient military assets in the Middle East, particularly after RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus was struck by a drone. In response, Sir Keir announced that Wildcat helicopters with anti-drone capabilities will be deployed to Cyprus this week, and air defence destroyer HMS Dragon will be sent to the eastern Mediterranean, though it is not scheduled to sail until next week.

Sir Keir also highlighted pre-emptive actions taken before the conflict escalated, noting, "Radar systems were pre-deployed, ground-based air defence was pre-deployed, counter-drone systems were pre-deployed and F-35 jets were pre-deployed."

Broader Conflict Developments

The Iran crisis has seen several key developments:

  • A charter flight departed Muscat, Oman, on Wednesday night to repatriate stranded British citizens, with two additional government-chartered flights planned in the coming days.
  • The US and Israel have intensified bombing campaigns against Iran's military and security infrastructure.
  • A US submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean.
  • Iran has continued launching attacks across the region, targeting Saudi Arabia and Kuwait with missiles and drones.
  • Western officials report a decline in Iranian missile strikes, though they caution Tehran retains several days of capability and may be conserving stockpiles.
  • Turkey intercepted a "ballistic munition" from Iran using NATO air defences.
  • Economic uncertainty persists due to the conflict's impact on global oil and gas supplies.
  • The UK has dispatched military experts with experience from the Ukraine war to advise on the Middle East situation.

Sir Keir concluded by reaffirming that the UK-US relationship is deeper than personal dynamics between leaders, asserting that cooperation continues unabated despite Trump's criticisms.
