President Trump has enthusiastically endorsed a proposal to rename U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to National Immigration and Customs Enforcement (NICE), a move intended to frustrate members of the media. The idea originated from conservative influencer Alyssa Marie, who suggested the change on social media back in March.
Trump's Endorsement
On Sunday night, Trump took to Truth Social to voice his support, writing, 'GREAT IDEA!!! DO IT.' The suggestion has garnered widespread support online, with many users calling it 'hilarious' and urging the name change. One user commented, 'Trump should sign that executive order just to watch their heads spin on live TV.'
Political Context
The endorsement comes amid ongoing tensions over immigration enforcement. The Trump administration has intensified border security efforts to reduce illegal immigration, drawing criticism from Democrats who have called for ICE to be abolished. Progressive Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington recently posted on X, 'ICE is not keeping us safe. It's terrorizing our communities, detaining US citizens, and letting people die in custody. Abolish ICE.' Similarly, New York City's democratic-socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has condemned ICE, claiming it has 'terrorized' U.S. citizens.
Despite such opposition, Trump has remained steadfast. Last month, he defied Mamdani by deploying approximately 500 ICE agents to LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports.
Recent Incident
Trump's endorsement of the name change occurred shortly after an alleged gunman, Cole Tomas Allen, opened fire at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night. Allen has been charged with attempting to assassinate the president, a crime punishable by up to life in prison. According to his manifesto, sent to his family minutes before the shooting, Allen expressed strong opposition to Trump and his policies, referring to himself as the 'Friendly Federal Assassin.'
Allen's manifesto stated, 'Turning the other cheek is for when you yourself are oppressed. I'm not the person raped in a detention camp. I'm not the fisherman executed without trial. I'm not a schoolkid blown up or a child starved or a teenage girl abused by the many criminals in this administration. Turning the other cheek when *someone else* is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor's crimes.'
On Monday, Allen was also charged with transporting a firearm and ammunition across state lines and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
