Political Prediction Markets See $4 Million Wagered on Trump's State of the Union Address
Donald Trump's upcoming State of the Union address has become the Super Bowl of political prediction markets, with traders placing millions of dollars in bets on what the President will say during his anticipated congressional speech. On the regulated exchange and prediction market site Kalshi, over $4 million is being wagered ahead of the address, highlighting the intense interest in Trump's remarks.
High Certainty on Economic and Anniversary References
Forecasts indicate a 93 percent likelihood that Trump will mention '250' and 'Trillion' during his speech. These terms reference the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and the economic growth that Trump frequently promotes. Multiple reports suggest the President's address will focus heavily on affordability and the economy, making these predictions highly probable among traders.
Low Odds for Cryptocurrency and Government Efficiency
In contrast, traders are less confident about Trump giving a nod to cryptocurrency. Terms like 'Bitcoin' and 'Ethereum' rank among the least likely mentions expected from the President. The odds on Kalshi also reveal that immigration enforcement is far more top of mind than government spending, with an 88 percent chance Trump will mention ICE compared to just a 23 percent chance he will talk about the Department of Government Efficiency.
Spike in Activity for Attendance and Duration Markets
Other Kalshi markets tied to Trump's speech have seen a significant spike in activity. With more than $3.3 million wagered, traders now put the odds of Barron Trump attending at 58 percent, marking a sharp 19-point jump in the past 24 hours. Additionally, Trump's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem have a 97 percent certainty of attending, according to market predictions.
There is also substantial money to be made by correctly predicting how long Trump's speech will last. Bettors see one hour or longer as the safest play, while the odds of the speech stretching to nearly two hours are less certain, sitting at just 38 percent. However, the duration market has less volume, with only approximately $100,000 in total bets placed.
Record-Breaking 'Mention' Markets and Global Focus
Kalshi routinely launches weekly markets whenever Trump is scheduled to deliver a speech or hold a press conference, but Tuesday's address to lawmakers is expected to become the largest 'mention' market in the platform's history once all bets are tallied. 'Mention' markets revolving around the President are one of the fastest-growing categories on the prediction site, surging from $128,000 in volume in January 2025 to $155 million in total bets by January 2026.
Other notable markets surging in anticipation for Trump's speech include predictions on which countries the President will mention. China and Venezuela top the list at 96 percent certainty, followed closely by Iran, as the looming threat of military strikes makes it almost certain Trump will address these issues. At the bottom of Kalshi's list are references to Jeffrey Epstein's island and Little Saint James, with traders wisely predicting Trump will avoid these terms due to his avoidance of the disgraced financier in recent remarks.
