Gout Gout Battles Flu to Claim Queensland Athletics Double Victory
Gout Gout Wins Queensland Athletics Double Despite Illness

Teenage sprint sensation Gout Gout has achieved a remarkable winning double at the Queensland Athletics Championships, securing victory in his favoured 200m event despite battling a severe bout of the flu. The 19-year-old athlete stopped the clock at 20.42 seconds into a challenging 2.1 metres per second headwind on Sunday, showcasing his determination and skill under adverse conditions.

Overcoming Illness to Excel

Gout had been suffering through a significant flu episode that left him bedridden with congestion in his head and chest. The Queenslander had to sleep between races as a direct result of being sick, yet he managed to push through the discomfort to compete at the highest level. After his 200m win, he celebrated by pinching his nose and pointing a finger to the sky, a symbolic gesture referring to his triumph over the illness.

Building Resilience for Future Competitions

In a post-race interview, Gout emphasised the importance of this experience in building his resilience. 'Knowing that even if I am sick, I can come out and perform, it definitely builds resilience,' he stated. 'It was not about times, it was about getting the wins and getting races under my belt. I was a little bit under the weather the last couple of days, but it does not change – you have got to go out there and run your race.'

He further explained that this victory at a state championships serves as a crucial stepping stone for major future events. 'It builds resilience knowing if you can do this at a state championships, knowing it is not a major competition, so being sick is not going to affect you too much. I now know if I can do this at state championships, if unfortunately I got sick at an Olympics or something like that, I can back it up and continue.'

Performance Details and Season Progress

Gout's time of 20.42 seconds was well shy of the Australian and Oceania record of 20.02 he set last year in Ostrava, but it still represents another positive step early in the season. A day earlier at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, Gout got out of his sick bed to win the under-20 100m title in 10.20 seconds, despite battling a head cold and unfavourable wet, windy conditions that were hardly conducive to fast sprinting.

Recent Achievements and Future Targets

Three weeks ago in the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet at the same venue, Gout won the 100m in 10.00 seconds, coming within a whisker of becoming just the third Australian to run a legal sub-10-second time. His main target this year is the world junior championships in Oregon in August, where he hopes to emulate the legendary Usain Bolt by winning the 200m event.

This double victory at the Queensland Athletics Championships not only highlights Gout's physical prowess but also his mental fortitude, as he continues to build momentum towards his ambitious goals in the world of athletics.
