Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson has publicly addressed the growing uncertainty surrounding his future at the club, with his current deal set to expire at the end of this season.
Contract Talks and Summer Decision Loom
The 32-year-old Scotland international, who will captain his nation at this summer's World Cup, confirmed he will become a free agent in July unless a new agreement is reached. Robertson revealed he was tempted by an offer from Atlético Madrid last summer but chose to remain on Merseyside. However, with just five months remaining on his contract, a decision is imminent.
"I have five months left and we have to see the option of staying or if there are options to leave and things like that," Robertson stated. "I will sit down with my family and we will decide." He emphasised that after a stressful summer, his current focus is on enjoying being a Liverpool player and his historic World Cup qualification with Scotland.
Reduced Role Under Slot But Influence Remains
Robertson's playing time has significantly diminished this campaign. He has started only four Premier League matches since the arrival of Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth. Despite this reduced on-pitch role, manager Arne Slot clearly values his experience, promoting him to vice-captain following Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid last year.
The defender, however, is adamant about his desire to play. "I am a player who wants to play," he asserted. "I have played with injuries. I have played when I was only at 50, 40 or 30 percent for this club and my country." He acknowledged his different role this season but stressed that no true competitor is happy sitting on the bench.
Weighing Up Anfield Legacy
As he contemplates his next step, Robertson reflected on his successful eight-and-a-half-year tenure at Liverpool. "I have given everything for the club and the club has treated me very well," he said. "I have won many trophies and had many good days here."
He believes he has performed well in his limited appearances this season and insists his situation is not a surprise, but it is nonetheless a pivotal moment in his career. The second half of the season will now be crucial in helping him and his family reach a final decision.
Meanwhile, Liverpool prepare to face Burnley this Saturday. Mohamed Salah, who was eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, is not expected to feature as his nation has a third-place playoff against Nigeria. He could potentially return for Wednesday's Champions League trip to Marseille.
