Australian football is celebrating the remarkable debut of a new teenage sensation, as 16-year-old Antonio Arena scored with his very first touch for Serie A titans AS Roma.
A Dream Debut in the Italian Cup
Thrown into the fray for his club debut in the 80th minute of Roma's Coppa Italia round-of-16 clash against Torino, the Sydney-born striker made an instant impact. With the clock showing 81 minutes, Arena rose to head past Torino goalkeeper Alberto Paleari, levelling the scores at 2-2 and sending the Roma bench into raptures.
The goal, coming just two minutes after he entered the pitch, was a stunning introduction to senior professional football for the teenager. His heroic intervention, however, was ultimately in vain. Torino clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory thanks to a 90th-minute winner from Emirhan Ilkhan.
Coach's Praise and a Rising Star's Path
Despite the defeat, Arena's performance did not go unnoticed. Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini singled out the youngster for praise after the match. "I'm happy about these very young players: one is 16 years old and it's an important process for him," Gasperini said. He added, "He (Arena) is certainly a player who has a great competitive drive, despite his young age. He has a lot of energy to offer and he's not afraid to put himself out there."
Arena's journey to the Stadio Olimpico began in Western Sydney, where he honed his skills at the Wanderers' Academy. A move to Italian club Pescara followed, where he made history. At 16 years and 25 days old, his goal in a Serie C match last year made him the first player born in 2009 to score in professional football in Italy and Pescara's youngest-ever scorer.
His form earned him a transfer to Roma in July 2025. On the international stage, Arena's dual citizenship has seen him represent both Australia and Italy at under-16 level, setting up a potential future tug-of-war for his services.
What This Means for Australian Football
Arena's immediate impact on one of Europe's biggest stages is a significant moment for Australian football. It highlights the growing pipeline of talent emerging from the country and succeeding at elite continental clubs. His fearlessness and clinical finish under pressure suggest a player with immense potential, poised for a bright future whether in the famous giallorosso of Roma or on the international stage.
