Carragher: Salah Stays at Liverpool as Isak Injury Forces January Rethink
Carragher: Salah to stay at Liverpool after Isak injury

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has delivered a firm verdict on the club's immediate transfer plans, stating he is certain star forward Mohamed Salah will remain at Anfield beyond the January window. This conviction stems directly from the serious injury suffered by fellow attacker Alexander Isak during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Isak Blow Forces Liverpool's Hand

The 47-year-old pundit explained that the significant fracture sustained by Isak, following a heavy challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven, has critically depleted manager Arne Slot's attacking options. Despite being able to limp from the pitch, the Swedish international now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

This development, according to Carragher, effectively ends any speculation about Salah's potential mid-season departure, even amid continued links to the Saudi Pro League. The Egyptian had previously claimed he felt 'thrown under the bus' by someone at the club, fuelling exit rumours.

Elliott Return and Transfer Targets Suggested

Speaking on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, Carragher outlined the likely consequences for Liverpool's squad. "I think with all certainty Mo Salah will stay at the club," he stated. He also pointed to a potential solution closer to home, suggesting there is a 'good chance' Harvey Elliott could return from his disappointing loan spell at Aston Villa as Slot seeks reinforcements.

Carragher further speculated on possible external signings, using Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo as an example. "If Liverpool are going to go for a striker or another attacking player... for example, Semenyo. Liverpool have also been very linked to him," he noted, referencing the player's reported January release clause. He described such a move as "a good way to get around" the absence of Isak.

Carragher's Verdict on the Van de Ven Challenge

The former Reds defender also shared his perspective on the incident that caused Isak's injury, expressing sympathy for Van de Ven. While Tottenham players were critical of the challenge, Carragher defended the Dutch defender's actions.

"I've put myself in Van de Ven's shoes and I probably would have done it too. You have to try and block it," Carragher argued. "He has to make that challenge. He can't let the striker shoot in that situation." He concluded that Isak was simply "very unlucky," describing the moment as one of the first flashes of the striker's true quality in a Liverpool shirt before the "very hard blow."
