Carrick, set to be confirmed as the Red Devils' temporary manager following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's departure, is keen to reunite with Woodgate. The pair worked together previously at Middlesbrough, where Carrick was manager and Woodgate served on his coaching staff. Carrick's appointment is expected to be announced imminently, placing him in charge for the remainder of the campaign.
However, the proposed move for Woodgate faces a potential hurdle. According to Sky Sports, Manchester United's hierarchy may be reluctant to sanction a short-term coaching appointment. The club is reportedly focused on reaching the end of the year before implementing a more permanent, long-term football structure. Fletcher's Role and Woodgate's Background
Another figure in the frame is Darren Fletcher, who has already taken caretaker charge for matches against Burnley and Brighton following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. As Fletcher is already employed by the club, shifting him into a revised coaching role under Carrick would be a straightforward process.
Woodgate's potential arrival would introduce a fresh perspective to a backroom staff historically dominated by former United players, many from the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Woodgate does share a notable connection with current United sporting director Jason Wilcox, having been teammates with him at Leeds United in the early 2000s before his move to Newcastle United.
Following his playing career, Woodgate moved into management, taking the top job at Middlesbrough and later Bournemouth.
