The imminent return of Michael Carrick to the Manchester United coaching staff has brought renewed attention to his existing relationship with current squad members, particularly winger Amad Diallo. The pair share a history from Carrick's previous stint at Old Trafford, and past comments reveal a foundation of mutual respect that could prove valuable.
A Shared History at Old Trafford
Michael Carrick was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching set-up when Amad arrived at Manchester United from Atalanta in early 2021. The Ivorian winger, then just 18, worked under Carrick during the coach's brief spell as caretaker manager in late 2021, before Ralf Rangnick's interim appointment. Their paths crossed again in the Championship during the 2022/23 season, when Amad was on loan at Sunderland and Carrick was managing Middlesbrough.
Mutual Admiration on Display
Following a 2-0 victory for Sunderland in January 2023, where Amad scored, Carrick was effusive in his praise. "He's really talented, Amad. Good in tight spaces and does what he does with the ball," Carrick stated. He highlighted the player's improved end product, noting he had "jumped up a level again" since their time together at United and described him as a "terrific footballer" he knew "very well."
Amad's admiration for Carrick was evident from his early days at the club. Upon joining, he willingly switched to the iconic No. 16 shirt, previously worn by Carrick. "I was happy because I know that Michael Carrick had previously worn that shirt for a long time and so it is a number worn by a legend of the club," Amad explained, showing clear reverence for his then-coach.
Reunion Ahead of Manchester Derby
The stage is now set for their reunion at Carrington. Amad is expected to be available for selection following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. His return comes at a pivotal moment, with Carrick's first match back in the dugout poised to be the high-pressure Manchester derby against City on Saturday.
With Amad having been utilised in an unfamiliar right wing-back role by previous manager Ruben Amorim, all eyes will be on Carrick's tactical approach. The existing positive dynamic between coach and player, built on past experience and public praise, could be a significant asset as United prepare for a critical phase of the season.
