Casemiro's Striking Endorsement of Mainoo Highlights Managerial Divide
Casemiro has delivered a powerful endorsement of Manchester United teammate Kobbie Mainoo, describing the young midfielder as "one of the best" in his position. This praise stands in stark contrast to the treatment Mainoo received under former manager Ruben Amorim, who consistently overlooked the academy graduate for starting roles.
From Sidelines to Spotlight Under Carrick
Mainoo's situation at Manchester United has transformed dramatically since Michael Carrick took interim charge. Under Amorim's management, Mainoo failed to secure a single Premier League start this season, with his only beginning coming in a surprising Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. This exclusion led the 20-year-old to contemplate a loan move or permanent exit, with clubs including Chelsea and Napoli showing interest.
Since Carrick's appointment, Mainoo has started every match and reclaimed his place in Thomas Tuchel's England squad. He featured in recent friendlies against Uruguay and Japan and now aims to secure a spot in England's World Cup squad. His resurgence has drawn attention to Amorim's previous decisions regarding the talented midfielder.
Casemiro's Unambiguous Praise
In a recent Q&A session with Manchester United, Casemiro left no doubt about his assessment of Mainoo's abilities. "Kobbie is the present and the future," declared the Brazilian veteran. "I think that he is one of the best No.8s and can be for that for the next 12 years."
Casemiro elaborated further, stating, "He is a player I really like. He always wants the ball. It is true that football can't change your mentality but Kobbie demonstrated that he hasn't changed his focus once. He has to continue focusing like he is now and continue playing the important role he is now. But what a player he is, he is a great player."
The midfielder highlighted Mainoo's performances in high-pressure situations, noting, "He has demonstrated this, in the Euros final with England, he has demonstrated it in finals, he scored in the FA Cup Final against Manchester City in 2024. Kobbie is the present and the future."
Amorim's Defensive Stance
When questioned in December about Mainoo's lack of playing time, Amorim responded defensively. "You always ask me the same thing," he remarked. "I understand what you are saying. You love Kobbie. He starts for England, but that doesn't mean I need to put Kobbie on when I feel I shouldn't."
Pundits Join Criticism of Amorim's Approach
Former Liverpool and England midfielder Steven Gerrard has been among the vocal critics of Amorim's handling of Mainoo. "I felt really sorry for him in terms of the kid's career under Amorim," Gerrard told TNT Sport. "I think it was out of order that he never got any opportunity, especially with Manchester United being so inconsistent."
Gerrard continued, "But not surprised that Michael Carrick started to play him. I think that was one of the straight wins if you walk into a job, if you like. Get Kobbie Mainoo back in, get him smiling, give him game time and minutes, and get him fit and up to the speed where we all know he can play. He's now at a level where he walks in the England squad, never mind Amorim not playing him. He walks into the England squad if he's playing regularly for Manchester United."
The dramatic turnaround in Mainoo's fortunes underscores the significant impact managerial decisions can have on young players' careers. While Amorim remained unconvinced of Mainoo's readiness for regular first-team football, both his teammate Casemiro and interim manager Carrick have demonstrated unwavering faith in the midfielder's abilities.
