Chelsea Boss Defends Cole Palmer Amid Criticism

Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane has strongly defended Cole Palmer against recent criticism, insisting the 23-year-old is not enduring a poor season despite a dip in form.

Palmer has struggled to replicate the heights of his first two campaigns at Stamford Bridge, scoring just five goals from open play in 29 appearances. Injuries have disrupted his season, and he has worked under three different managers – Enzo Maresca, Liam Rosenior, and now McFarlane.

Speaking ahead of Monday's Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, McFarlane rejected the narrative that Palmer is underperforming. He recalled coaching Palmer in Manchester City's academy and highlighted the challenges of the player's first major injury.

"It's been a difficult period for Cole. He's had his first injury that he's pretty much ever had in his career, and he's had to learn how to deal with that," McFarlane said. "I don't agree with the narrative that he isn't playing well. There are games where he can impact more, but he's also created a lot of good chances for players. He can't control whether that's finished off."

McFarlane added: "I do think he's had some really good games in the last three months, and it's just a case of building that consistency. I'm really pleased with Cole. He shows us his talent every single day."

Palmer's form and Chelsea's managerial instability have fueled speculation about a potential summer exit, with links to Manchester United. However, the playmaker, who is under contract until 2033, dismissed the rumors in a recent interview with The Guardian. "Everyone just talks. When I see it, I just laugh. I've got no plans to move from Chelsea," he said.

With four Premier League games remaining and an FA Cup final on the horizon, Palmer remains focused on finishing the season strongly and securing Champions League qualification.
