Juventus and Portugal winger Francisco Conceicao has publicly addressed the mounting speculation connecting him with a potential £52 million transfer to Liverpool. This comes as the Premier League champions begin their search for a successor to the departing Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool's Post-Salah Era Begins
Mohamed Salah sent shockwaves through the football world on Tuesday, March 24, by announcing his departure from Liverpool at the season's conclusion. After nine illustrious years at Anfield, during which he scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, the Egyptian forward's exit leaves a significant void in Liverpool's attacking lineup.
Conceicao's Focused Response
Amidst the swirling transfer rumours, Francisco Conceicao was questioned about the Liverpool links prior to Portugal's international friendlies against Mexico and the United States. The 23-year-old winger offered a measured response, stating: "I know people talk about a big club, but I play for a big club where I am happy. At the moment I am only focused on these two games with the national team and then I will focus on the final stretch of the season to help my club as much as possible."
Conceicao moved to Juventus from Porto in August 2024, initially on loan, before making the transfer permanent for €32 million (£27.7 million). Inheriting the prestigious No.7 shirt vacated by Federico Chiesa's move to Liverpool, he has scored seven goals in 40 appearances last season and added four more in 34 outings during the current campaign.
Juventus' Champions League Ambitions
The Portuguese international emphasized the pressure at Juventus, who are currently engaged in a fierce battle to secure Champions League qualification. "I am at a big club where the pressure to win is very high," Conceicao remarked. "I just have to keep working and contribute with goals and assists. My objective is to help with goals and assists, that is what I try to do. I must continue every day to show that I have the ability to help the national team and be helped by them to keep improving."
Liverpool's Extensive Shortlist
While Conceicao represents one potential target, Liverpool's search for Salah's replacement appears to be casting a wide net across European football. Several other wingers have been suggested as possible successors:
- Michael Olise of Bayern Munich
- Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa
- Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain
- Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig
However, Bayern Munich have made their position regarding Olise abundantly clear. Chief executive Uli Hoeness commented: "Remember Liverpool spent €500m last summer and is having a very bad season. So we won't be contributing to them playing better next year." Director of sport Max Eberl added: "We're not even wasting a thought on that. He is a Bayern Munich player and has every opportunity here that top players could wish for. We want to shape the future with him."
Conceicao's Previous Premier League Interest
Interestingly, this isn't the first time Conceicao has been linked with a move to Merseyside. Last summer, he emerged as a prime transfer target for Liverpool's neighbours Everton before ultimately opting for his permanent switch to Juventus. His current valuation of £52 million reflects his growing stature in European football at just 23 years of age.
As Liverpool prepare for life after Salah, the coming months will reveal whether Francisco Conceicao's future lies in Turin or whether he might become the latest Portuguese talent to grace the Premier League. For now, the young winger remains focused on his international duties and helping Juventus secure their Champions League ambitions.
