Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf found himself at the centre of controversy on Sunday after appearing to throw a punch towards a spectator during an NFL clash.
Incident at Ford Field
The altercation occurred during the second quarter of the Steelers' 29-24 victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Television broadcasts captured the moment the 28-year-old player approached the stands and engaged with a fan who was leaning over a railing.
Footage showed Metcalf seemingly grabbing the supporter's distinctive blue wig before making a swinging motion towards the individual's face. The fan involved, however, did not appear overly distressed by the encounter and was later seen raising his arms in a celebratory gesture.
What sparked the confrontation?
According to CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, the interaction began when Metcalf noticed the fan holding up a Steelers jersey. "He went over and the fan said something to him, obviously," Wolfson explained during the broadcast. "Metcalf did not like what he said and you saw the swipe there."
Wolfson added that no other Steelers players intervened or addressed Metcalf about the incident immediately afterwards. Officials overseeing the game did not witness the altercation, allowing Metcalf to remain on the field for the duration of the contest.
Potential disciplinary action
The Pittsburgh organisation must now wait to see if the league will take any disciplinary action against their receiver. Any suspension or fine could impact the team ahead of their crucial upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns.
