Borussia Dortmund Consider Third Move for Manchester United's Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho's turbulent and largely unsuccessful tenure at Manchester United appears to be approaching its conclusion, with the English winger poised to depart Old Trafford as a free agent this summer. The £73 million signing from 2021 has struggled to justify his hefty price tag, managing just 12 goals in 83 appearances for the Red Devils across his entire spell.
A Series of Loan Moves and Disappointing Returns
Sancho has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons away from Manchester United on various loan deals, failing to rediscover the form that once made him one of Europe's most exciting prospects. His most recent stint has been with Aston Villa, where he has scored only a single goal—a match-winner against Fenerbahce in the Europa League—and made just 17 starts in all competitions.
"The first part of the season was not enough," admitted Villa manager Unai Emery earlier this year, reflecting on Sancho's performances. "He was working and trying, but not achieving the performance we needed. Now he is getting better. He is getting the challenge for him and us."
Prior to his Villa loan, Sancho returned to Borussia Dortmund for the second half of the 2023/24 campaign, having previously enjoyed a successful spell there before his move to England. He also spent time at Chelsea last season, though the Blues opted to pay a penalty fee to avoid making that loan deal permanent.
Dortmund's Renewed Interest and Summer Plans
In a significant development, Borussia Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken has publicly confirmed that the German club is considering a third move for Sancho. Speaking to Sport Bild, Ricken outlined Dortmund's transfer strategy and specifically mentioned the 26-year-old as a potential target.
"We are currently looking at a lot of players and analysing them," Ricken stated. "We check whether they can make us better. We are doing the same with Jadon. Of course, we are looking for an offensive player who brings quality, can help us immediately, and doesn't require an unrealistic transfer fee."
Ricken also noted that Dortmund are assessing defensive reinforcements, with Niklas Süle departing and Emre Can facing a lengthy injury absence. However, the focus on Sancho highlights the club's belief that he could still offer value, particularly on a free transfer given his expiring contract.
Contract Situation and Future Prospects
Manchester United have decided against activating an option to extend Sancho's contract by an additional year, meaning he will become a free agent when his current deal expires this summer. This provides an opportunity for clubs like Dortmund to secure his services without a transfer fee, though his wages remain a potential sticking point.
Unai Emery hinted that Villa could also be in the mix for a permanent deal, stating: "He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here. If he plays his best football, we will want him. But also other teams could be involved in the interest for him."
Despite his struggles, Sancho's pedigree and previous success at Dortmund—where he scored 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 137 appearances—suggest he could still revive his career in the right environment. A return to the Bundesliga, where he initially made his name, might offer the fresh start he desperately needs.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on where Jadon Sancho lands next, with Borussia Dortmund emerging as a strong contender to bring the winger back to familiar surroundings for a third time.
