Drunken Friend Admits Abusive Phone Call to NRL Star Over Alleged Cheating

A close friend of rugby league star Connor Watson has publicly confessed to verbally abusing the Sydney Roosters hooker during a heated phone call made while under the influence of alcohol. Joey Wheatley, a diehard Manly Sea Eagles supporter, revealed he targeted Watson after becoming enraged by what he perceived as blatant cheating during a recent NRL clash.

Heated Accusations Over Illegal Play

Wheatley's outburst was triggered by Watson's performance in the match at Brookvale Oval on March 26, where the Roosters secured a convincing 36-16 victory. Specifically, Wheatley accused Watson of executing an illegal strip during a two-man tackle, an action he claimed unfairly shifted the momentum of the game.

"You are cheating blatantly. Two in the tackle, you strip the ball and change the game on its head," Wheatley declared during the call. He further taunted Watson by stating, "Connor, they don't even want you there at the Roosters. Come home to Manly."

Reflection and Regret After the Incident

In a subsequent interview with Sportscafe Media, Wheatley expressed some remorse for his aggressive behaviour, though he stood by the substance of his accusations. "Look, that's not something I'm super proud of," he admitted. "I was a little bit inebriated at the time, but I still stick with everything I said."

Wheatley elaborated on his disappointment, emphasising that Watson's alleged actions contradicted the spirit of the game. "He did steal the ball, and it was illegal, and it wasn't in the spirit of the game, which is how he's played his whole career," he asserted. "As you know it's been a couple of years for us Manly... and to see that, by a friend... more than anything, I found it most disappointing."

Watson's Future Amid Transfer Speculation

The incident adds an intriguing layer to Watson's professional circumstances. The 29-year-old hooker is currently under contract with the Sydney Roosters until the conclusion of the 2027 NRL season. However, persistent rumours have linked him with a potential move to the Manly Sea Eagles, leaving his long-term future uncertain.

Watson is scheduled to play for the Roosters in their upcoming ANZAC Day fixture against the winless St George Illawarra Dragons at Allianz Stadium. This match will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as Watson continues to be a pivotal figure in the Roosters' campaign.
