Dutch footballer Victor Edvardsen has issued a public apology after being accused of bullying Angelo Stiller, a Manchester United transfer target, during a Europa League match. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, including from Dutch legend Wesley Sneijder.
On-Pitch Altercation Sparks Outrage
The controversy erupted during the Thursday night fixture between Stuttgart and Go Ahead Eagles, which the German side won 4-0. In the 73rd minute, Victor Edvardsen fouled Atakan Karazor before turning his attention to Angelo Stiller.
The 29-year-old Swede repeatedly pointed at Stiller's nose, a cruel reference to the cleft lip the Stuttgart midfielder was born with. The action triggered an immediate on-field confrontation, with several Stuttgart players rushing to defend their teammate. Both Edvardsen and a visibly furious Stiller were shown yellow cards by referee Mohammed Al-Hakim.
Swift Condemnation and Club Action
The fallout was rapid and severe. Former Real Madrid star Wesley Sneijder did not hold back in his criticism during an appearance on Ziggo Sport. "He needs to walk to Frankfurt's dressing room right now and apologise. This is bullying," Sneijder stated. "We know what bullying can lead to... This is very serious. Go Ahead Eagles should grab him by the ear and drag him to Frankfurt's dressing room. Children will see this behaviour."
Edvardsen's club took disciplinary action, fining the striker €500 (£438.28), with the money donated to charity. The player himself later sought to make amends. "I want to apologise for my behaviour yesterday," Edvardsen said. "Things were said and done between us that do not belong on a football pitch. After the match, I went to Stuttgart's locker room to apologise. I have a role to play as an example to others and I must behave accordingly."
Stiller's Rising Profile and United Interest
The incident has put a spotlight on Angelo Stiller, a 23-year-old defensive midfielder who is reportedly on the radar of Manchester United. According to ESPN's Rob Dawson, United have placed Stiller on a seven-man shortlist as they plan a summer squad overhaul.
Stiller has become a key player for Stuttgart this season, making 19 appearances. His form has also earned him a place in the German national team, where he has five caps and hopes to secure a spot in Julian Nagelsmann's World Cup squad. With his contract running until 2028, any potential transfer is believed to command a fee in the region of £44 million.
The event serves as a stark reminder of the scrutiny professional athletes face, both for their performance and their conduct, with the line between competitive banter and unacceptable bullying being fiercely debated in the aftermath.
