England cricketer Jonny Bairstow has issued a public appeal for the safety and security of his England Lions squad, who are currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates amid escalating regional attacks. The urgent call comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board cancelled scheduled matches and delayed travel arrangements due to heightened security risks in the Middle East.
Matches Cancelled and Travel Disrupted
On Saturday night, the England Lions officially cancelled their second scheduled 50-over match against the Pakistan Shaheens in Abu Dhabi. This decision was made directly in response to serious security concerns following military actions in the region. The match was set to take place at the Zayed Cricket Stadium but was called off following official government security advice.
Escalating Regional Conflict
The security concerns stem from a significant escalation in Middle East tensions. On Saturday morning, United States and Israeli forces launched what they described as a 'pre-emptive' strike against Iran, citing concerns about Tehran's nuclear weapons development program. This attack prompted immediate retaliation from Iran, with multiple missiles reported to have targeted Israel and other locations across the Middle East region.
The England and Wales Cricket Board released an official statement on Saturday evening confirming the match cancellation and additional travel disruptions. "The safety and security of our teams and staff is our top priority," the ECB statement emphasized. "We are in contact with security experts and the Government in relation to current events in the Middle East, and are following official advice."
Multiple Cricket Tours Affected
The security situation has impacted multiple England cricket tours. Not only was the Lions match cancelled, but the ECB also announced they are delaying the departure of the England Women's cricket team for their proposed trip to Abu Dhabi scheduled for next week. The board stated they will continue monitoring the situation and assessing official advice regarding the future of these cricket tours.
Despite these disruptions, England Men's cricket team will proceed with their planned travel to Mumbai for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi-final as originally scheduled.
Bairstow's Personal Appeal
Jonny Bairstow, who is touring with the England Lions in a coaching capacity under former England cricket legend Andrew Flintoff, took to social media in the early hours of Sunday morning seeking updates and assistance. The cricketer posted on his Instagram story, directly appealing for help and information regarding the squad's safety amid the developing crisis.
The ECB's comprehensive statement further explained: "Tomorrow's second 50-over game between England Men's Lions and Pakistan Shaheens in Abu Dhabi will no longer go ahead, and we are delaying the departure of England Women for their proposed trip to Abu Dhabi next week. We will continue to monitor and assess the situation and official advice in relation to the future of these trips."
This developing situation represents one of the most significant security disruptions to international cricket in recent years, with player safety taking precedence over sporting commitments as regional tensions continue to escalate.
