England Squad Reduced After Uruguay Draw as Key Stars Depart Camp
Eight players have departed the England camp this week following the national team's draw with Uruguay, with notable exits including Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice. The Three Lions' manager, Thomas Tuchel, had initially assembled a 35-man squad for this international break, aiming to conduct a final close assessment of players before selecting his World Cup roster.
Tepid Performance Leads to Squad Revisions
Several fringe stars were given an opportunity to impress during Friday night's match against Uruguay, but a lacklustre and tepid performance drew criticism from fans. In response, the Football Association has confirmed that a revised squad of 27 players will remain in camp to prepare for the upcoming friendly against Japan on Tuesday.
Those returning to their clubs include Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, both of whom were absent from the Uruguay game and now require medical evaluation. If deemed fit, these two players are considered near certainties to be included in the squad for this summer's major tournament.
Injury Concerns Prompt Further Departures
Fellow Arsenal player Noni Madueke, who sustained an injury and was forced off the pitch in the first half against Uruguay, will also return to north London for treatment. Additionally, John Stones, a long-standing England regular who has faced fitness challenges in what is likely his final season with Manchester City, is heading back to his club after picking up an injury during training on Friday.
Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton is another casualty, leaving camp due to an issue that emerged after he came on as a second-half substitute in the match. The reasons for the departures of Aaron Ramsdale (Newcastle), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan), and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds) remain unclear at this time.
New Additions to Bolster Squad for Japan Friendly
In contrast, several players will join the group to prepare for the Japan friendly after being granted a break during the first week of the international block by Tuchel. This list includes:
- Dean Henderson
- Nico O’Reilly
- Ezri Konsa
- Marc Guéhi
- Dan Burn
- Elliot Anderson
- Morgan Rogers
- Anthony Gordon
- Harry Kane
This reshuffling highlights the ongoing evaluation process as Tuchel fine-tunes his squad ahead of critical upcoming fixtures. Further updates are expected as the team continues its preparations.
