Ronnie O'Sullivan secured a 10-7 victory over Gary Wilson in the Tour Championship semi-final, despite a bizarre table malfunction early in the match. The issue occurred after the opening two frames at the Manchester venue, when a pocket on the snooker table was discovered to have malfunctioned.
ITV commentator Phil Yates noted that the pocket required repair, with a table fitter arriving swiftly to fix the problem. The rapid repair was likened to a 'Formula One pit-stop' by commentators, ensuring minimal disruption to the players' rhythm. Eurosport reported that a pocket had dropped to the floor, but the fix was so quick that the fitter did not appear on television screens.
After the repair, O'Sullivan bounced back from losing the first two frames to level the match at 2-2. He made a century break to the delight of the crowd, and only a yellow ball bouncing out of the pocket jaws prevented him from clearing the table. Wilson managed just one pot in the two frames following the repair.
Wilson's frustrations continued after the interval, as he slammed his cue on the floor after missing a black ball over the pocket. O'Sullivan capitalised with another century break to take a 3-2 lead. However, Wilson fought back to level the match at 4-4 by the mid-session interval.
Ultimately, O'Sullivan's experience prevailed, as he won 10-7 to book his place in Sunday's final. He will face the winner of the other semi-final between Mark Williams and Mark Allen, which takes place on Saturday.
