Enzo Fernandez Opens Up on Chelsea 'Hurt' After Maresca's Brutal Exit
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has publicly addressed the emotional impact of Enzo Maresca's departure from Stamford Bridge, describing it as a painful event that left the squad struggling to comprehend the club's decision-making. The Argentine international spoke for the first time about the Italian manager's exit, which occurred at the beginning of the year, with Liam Rosenior subsequently taking over as Chelsea boss.
Maresca's Final Chapter at Chelsea
Enzo Maresca's last match in charge of Chelsea was a 2-2 Premier League draw against Bournemouth, which also marked the club's final fixture of 2025. His departure came amid persistent rumours linking him to the Manchester City managerial position, where he was reportedly considered as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola. The timing of his exit, in the middle of the season, has been a point of contention within the Chelsea camp.
Fernandez's Candid Remarks
Speaking after Chelsea's heavy 8-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, Fernandez discussed Maresca's departure in an interview with Argentinian media. Former Argentinian player Juan Pablo Sorin questioned him about the circumstances surrounding the manager's exit. Fernandez expressed confusion and frustration, stating, "I don't understand it [what happened]. Sometimes as a player, there's things we don't understand and the way they try to manage things. I don't have an answer for you because I don't know."
He elaborated on the emotional toll, saying, "Obviously, it was a departure that hurt a lot because we had a lot of identity, he gave us order but it's the way that football is, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. But we always had a clear identity when it came to training, playing and obviously his departure hurt us especially in the middle of the season - it cuts everything short."
Fan Reactions and Speculation
Fernandez's comments have sparked widespread speculation among Chelsea supporters, with many interpreting his words as a subtle critique of the current management under Liam Rosenior. One fan remarked, "Seems like jabs at Rosenior, Chelsea are so finished man," while another questioned, "Why would he even say this as a vice captain under a new manager." A third added, "This is surely one small step closer to his exit. really really sad to see," and a fourth queried, "How is it worse? If by now you don't know what he said is truth then you know nothing and you're not a Chelsea fan."
Future Uncertainty for Fernandez
In the same interview, Fernandez also hinted at potential uncertainty regarding his own future at Chelsea. When asked about his plans, he cryptically stated, "I don't know, there are eight games left and the FA Cup. There's the World Cup and then we'll see." This comment has fuelled further speculation about his long-term commitment to the club, adding another layer of intrigue to an already tumultuous period for Chelsea.
The midfielder's revelations highlight the ongoing challenges within the Chelsea squad as they navigate managerial changes and internal dynamics. With the season progressing and key fixtures ahead, Fernandez's words underscore the need for stability and clear communication at Stamford Bridge to ensure the team can move forward effectively.
