Espanyol's Remarkable La Liga Resurgence Under New Ownership

Espanyol's impressive second campaign back in La Liga has emerged as one of the standout stories of the season in Spanish football. The club's incredible rise from the second tier to the brink of European qualification in under two years is a testament to strategic planning and resilience.

From Promotion to European Ambitions

A dramatic play-off final in June 2024 saw Espanyol secure a 2-1 aggregate victory over Real Oviedo, marking their return to La Liga after a second promotion in three years. Their initial season back was challenging, with the team narrowly avoiding relegation under manager Manolo Gonzalez. Despite financial constraints, the club made astute signings last summer, laying the groundwork for progress.

The 2025/26 campaign began strongly, culminating in a takeover by Velocity Sports Partners (VSP), the sports investment arm of Burnley FC owners ALK Capital, in October 2025. This injection of support propelled Espanyol to five consecutive league wins between November and December, positioning them just two points from fourth place.

Navigating Challenges and Maintaining Hope

Since that peak, Espanyol have faced a difficult run, failing to win any of their last 11 league fixtures. However, they remain in eighth place, only four points adrift of a Europa Conference League spot with 10 games remaining. This position would have been considered a significant achievement at the season's outset.

Unai Ezkurra, Director of Football Processes and Big Data at Espanyol, reflected on the season's fluctuations. "We're very pleased with the performance in the first part of the season, especially of the squad," he said. "Sometimes you get the points you don't deserve and sometimes you don't get the ones you deserve. So at the end, I think we are now rebalancing a little bit the performance of the season."

Strategic Vision and Organic Growth

Ezkurra elaborated on the club's philosophy, developed alongside sporting director Fran Garagarza. "The strategy was clear when I got to the club," he explained. "There was a plan to re-establish the club with some stability after two relegations in the last few years. We achieved promotion last year with difficulties in terms of finances, readjusting with the La Liga salary cap."

He emphasized the importance of organic growth. "This season was also another step forward to grow. For us, it's very important to grow organically. I think, in football, you cannot buy success or progress. Our idea is to grow every year, making a stronger structural base of a club that can establish itself and fight for this moment."

New Ownership's Custodial Approach

Bradley Spiby, the club's Chief Operating Officer and former Burnley Chief of Staff, highlighted the ambitions of the new ownership group. "I think it goes without saying that this club has historically been very successful," he said. "Something we talk a lot about in our ownership group is being custodians. It's something that we wear very heavily on our shoulders, not just here, but also in Burnley."

Spiby added, "When we think about being custodians, it really is our responsibility to lean on and preserve what has made Espanyol what it is today historically and use that as a superpower going forward. Our goal is to make sure we return to that status with a self-sufficient and stable base so it can continue to be that for a very long time."

Player Mindset and Fan Support

The shift in mentality extends to the squad, as noted by English midfielder Tyrhys Dolan, who joined on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers last summer. "For me, when I came to Espanyol, it was just off the back of last season and it was a proper survivor's mentality," Dolan shared. "Everyone was really willing to fight and one thing I noticed was that the supporters were really behind us with everything we were doing."

He continued, "When we started racking up a few wins, it was really understanding a winner's mindset in the team and the manager implemented that into us. You know, he's mental about football, and that was something that I was excited about. We're just enjoying it and I'm just taking it all in my stride as I go."

As the season approaches its climax, Espanyol's blend of strategic vision, new ownership support, and player determination positions them as a compelling narrative in La Liga's race for European places.
