Interim manager Darren Fletcher has issued a rallying cry to his Manchester United players, demanding they give everything to win the FA Cup and salvage pride from a difficult campaign.
A Season of Disappointment Fuels Cup Ambition
The Red Devils enter Sunday's third-round tie against Brighton sitting seventh in the Premier League, but more painfully, experiencing their first season without European football since 2014/15. This continental absence follows last May's damaging Europa League final defeat to Tottenham and the low point of August's Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby under former coach Ruben Amorim.
Amorim's patchy 14-month reign was ended on Monday, leaving the club in the process of appointing a caretaker manager. In the meantime, Fletcher has taken interim charge and immediately emphasised the importance of the famous old competition.
"It's an important competition and Manchester United is about winning trophies," Fletcher stated. "I think we've had good success in the competition in recent years – won it a couple years ago, lost in a final. It's the first trophy that I won as a player. It's a special tournament."

With the club out of Europe and the League Cup, Fletcher believes the FA Cup is now a primary target. "With the season so far... the FA Cup's a trophy that we should be vying to win and giving ourselves every opportunity to win," he added.
United's hierarchy is currently weighing up who should lead the team for the rest of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are considered frontrunners, with Fletcher and Ruud van Nistelrooy also in contention. The Press Association understands Solskjaer was due for face-to-face talks with club chiefs on Saturday, while Carrick met with them earlier in the week.
Whoever takes the helm will soon have a stronger squad at their disposal. The Africa Cup of Nations is concluding, and injury problems are easing. Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo all returned for Wednesday's 2-2 draw at Burnley.

The return of 20-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is particularly notable after a frustrating season under Amorim, who did not grant him a single Premier League start. Mainoo's request for a loan move was blocked at the campaign's outset.
Fletcher, who knows the youngster well, provided an update on his mindset. "He seems in a good place – Kobbie doesn't give you much, so you wouldn't know if he was in a good place or not so good," Fletcher said with a laugh. "But I know him well... he's in a good place, he's trained well."
