Tyson Fury's brother has publicly contradicted their father's stark assessment that the former world heavyweight champion is well past his prime. This family disagreement emerges just ahead of Fury's highly anticipated return to the ring after a significant hiatus.
Divergent Views on Fury's Form
John Fury, the boxer's outspoken father, has claimed in a recent interview that his son has not been the same fighter since his epic trilogy of bouts with Deontay Wilder. He suggested that those brutal encounters effectively finished Tyson as a top-level competitor.
"I think he's past his best," Fury Sr told Playbook Boxing. "I'm a no-filter kind of guy - I say it how I see it. I love him, but there are too many people patting him on the back and telling him things that aren't true, building him up like he's invincible. He's not and he hasn't been for a while."
A Father's Frank Assessment
John Fury elaborated on his concerns, pointing specifically to what he perceives as a decline in his son's physical capabilities. "Tyson has been gone since the Deontay Wilder fights, they finished him. Wilder completely done him. He's not got a leg underneath him. He's took a lot away from Tyson," he stated.
He further expressed worry about the upcoming opponent, Arslanbek Makhmudov, whom he views as a serious threat. "Makhmudov is a problem for Tyson. I am the first one to say it. Listen, I understand now that Tyson is testing himself. But, I can tell you now, his legs aren't there anymore. I understand the only way he will believe that and see that is when the first bell rings."
Brotherly Support and Confidence
In stark contrast, Tyson Fury's brother, Shane Fury, has offered a much more optimistic perspective. He insists that the heavyweight is in excellent spirits and physical condition as he prepares for his comeback bout.
"Tyson is in a good place," Shane told iFL TV. "When you're doing something dangerous and you're getting well rewarded, crack on and do the best you can. I speak to him every day and he's never had a bad day, never once had a bad day, he's training well and sparring well."
Predicting a Successful Return
Shane Fury expressed confidence in his brother's ability to perform at a high level despite the extended break from competition. "I think he's going to do well. No one knows until he gets in there but I think he'll do well. He's in a good place, he's happy and a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter."
This familial dispute highlights the contrasting narratives surrounding Tyson Fury's current form. The boxer has not fought since his second consecutive defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024. His scheduled comeback is set for April 11 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where he will face the formidable Arslanbek Makhmudov.
The public disagreement between father and son adds an intriguing layer of drama to the buildup of this significant heavyweight contest. Fans and analysts will be watching closely to see which family member's assessment proves accurate when Fury steps back into the ring.
