Steven Gerrard Endorses Roberto De Zerbi for Tottenham Hotspur Managerial Role
Steven Gerrard has publicly endorsed Roberto De Zerbi as an ideal candidate for the vacant managerial position at Tottenham Hotspur, highlighting the Italian's proven track record in nurturing young talent. This endorsement comes in the wake of interim manager Igor Tudor's departure from the club by mutual agreement after a challenging tenure.
Tudor's Exit and the Search for a New Manager
Tottenham Hotspur announced they had reached a mutual agreement to part ways with interim boss Igor Tudor, who managed only one victory in seven matches during his brief spell in charge. The club is now actively seeking a permanent replacement, with multiple candidates under consideration.
Roberto De Zerbi has emerged as the bookmakers' favourite for the role, following his exit from Marseille in February. Reports suggest that De Zerbi has already held private discussions with Spurs officials and may be willing to take over before the current season concludes, marking a shift from his earlier preference to wait until the summer.
Gerrard's Praise for De Zerbi's Developmental Skills
Steven Gerrard, the former Liverpool captain and current pundit, has spoken highly of De Zerbi's ability to improve young players. Gerrard cited the example of Ethan Nwaneri, an Arsenal youngster who moved on loan to Marseille under De Zerbi's management.
"I think Mikel Arteta has been extremely clever here because he's sending him to De Zerbi as well, who has got a track record for improving players," Gerrard told TNT Sports. "He will give him the time and education and development, and he'll get more game time playing for Marseille."
Gerrard emphasized that such experience would benefit Nwaneri's growth, stating, "Give him different experiences, go and test him in France. Test him around Europe and hopefully in six months or if he extends it then he comes back with more games under his belt and more experience and he's a better player. But without a doubt, De Zerbi will make him a better player."
Tottenham's Young Talent and Managerial Prospects
Tottenham boasts a squad rich with promising young players, including Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mathys Tel, Pape Matar Sarr, Destiny Udogie, Xavi Simons, Souza, and Wilson Odobert. The club has invested approximately £193 million in these prospects, according to Transfermarkt, making De Zerbi's developmental expertise particularly appealing.
Despite De Zerbi's brief 18-month stint at Marseille, which ended before Nwaneri could fully benefit, the young player himself praised the coach, calling him "one of the best coaches in the world."
Other Candidates and Tottenham's Timelines
Beyond De Zerbi, other names linked to the Tottenham job include Sean Dyche, Adi Hutter, Marco Silva, and Oliver Glasner. Mauricio Pochettino is also listed as a second choice by bookmakers, but a return seems unlikely in the near future as he is set to manage the United States at the upcoming World Cup.
Mirror Football reports that Tottenham are working discreetly to appoint a new manager within days, aiming to allow the incoming boss time to integrate with the squad during the international break. This swift action underscores the club's urgency to stabilize and address relegation fears amid a challenging season.
