Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has voiced his astonishment at the exclusion of Trent Alexander-Arnold from England's national squad, raising questions about the selection process ahead of crucial international friendlies and the looming World Cup.
Gerrard's Surprise at Alexander-Arnold Omission
The Real Madrid defender was notably absent from manager Thomas Tuchel's 35-man roster for the upcoming matches against Uruguay and Japan, with Tino Livramento and Djed Spence preferred as right-back options. This decision has sparked debate among football pundits and fans alike.
Selection Controversy and Right-Back Competition
Alexander-Arnold, who last played for England in a 1-0 victory over Andorra in June, finds himself overlooked despite his proven talent. With Reece James sidelined due to injury, the choice of Livramento and Spence has drawn scrutiny. Gerrard, when questioned about the snub, responded emphatically, stating his belief that Alexander-Arnold is undoubtedly among the best players in the country.
"Very much so," Gerrard said, expressing his surprise at Tuchel's decision. "Listen, we've got some good options at right-back, Reece James is world class, I really like Livramento, I know he's had a couple of injuries but he can play both sides. I understand the selection, but I just think, 'is Trent among the best 35 players in this country?' Of course he is."
Gerrard's World Cup Claim and Tactical Insight
Gerrard highlighted Alexander-Arnold's unique abilities, suggesting that the defender could be a game-changer in specific scenarios, such as matches where England faces a defensive low block. He argued that Alexander-Arnold's passing prowess could unlock stubborn defences, making him a valuable asset off the bench.
"There's going to be certain games where England have to open the door, they might be against a low block where it's really frustrating and Trent is one of these players who can come off the bench and just completely change the game with one pass, he's that level of a player," Gerrard explained.
Tuchel's Explanation and Squad Dynamics
Tuchel addressed the omission during a press conference, describing it as a "tough decision" alongside other exclusions like Ollie Watkins and Luke Shaw. He emphasised that it was a sporting choice, based on the different profiles offered by Livramento and Spence compared to Alexander-Arnold.
"Tino Livramento and Djed Spence can play for us on the right, Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin can play up front. I have a very clear picture of what Ollie can give us, so I want to have a look at two other players to get a better picture and have a clearer opinion," Tuchel stated.
He acknowledged Alexander-Arnold's strengths, noting past experiences where the defender caused problems for his teams, but pointed to England's performance in recent months as evidence for the selection.
Broader Implications for England's World Cup Preparations
Gerrard expressed disappointment for Alexander-Arnold, while also considering factors that might influence squad selection, such as playing time, physical condition, and off-pitch circumstances. He suggested that Tuchel might be managing group dynamics, preferring players who align with his tactical vision over a six-week period rather than for individual matches.
"So I am surprised and I'm disappointed for him. But there's a lot of other situations that you've got to take into consideration. How much has he played? Is he physically at his best? Is there stuff going on off the pitch? Is it where he (Tuchel) doesn't want a group of players where those who aren't going to be in the XI that might be different people around the place..." Gerrard pondered.
This controversy underscores the intense competition for places in the England squad as the team gears up for the World Cup, with Tuchel's decisions likely to be closely watched in the coming months.
