The search for the next head coach of the New York Giants is intensifying, with former Baltimore Ravens leader John Harbaugh now facing significant competition for the coveted role.
Pierce Makes a Powerful Impression
While Harbaugh, who left the Ravens after 18 seasons this week, remains a prime target, a surprise candidate has forcefully entered the fray. Antonio Pierce, the former Las Vegas Raiders head coach, reportedly conducted an outstanding interview at the Giants' headquarters on Thursday. According to The Athletic columnist Ian O'Connor, Pierce "did a very good job" and left an "extremely positive impression."
Sources familiar with the process highlighted Pierce's growth since his playing days, with one stating he was "blown away" by his development. Another emphasised his leadership qualities, noting he is a "born leader" who learned a great deal from former Giants coach Tom Coughlin. Pierce, who won a Super Bowl with the Giants as a player in 2008, has a 9-17 career record as a head coach.
Harbaugh Remains the Primary Target
Despite Pierce's strong showing, the Giants' process is firmly centred on John Harbaugh. The organisation is expected to hold off on any final decision until they have spoken with the highly sought-after coach, likely sometime next week. Harbaugh is considering multiple vacancies across the league, including with the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans.
He has also received a notable public endorsement. Former US President Donald Trump used his Truth Social platform on Saturday to urge, "The New York Football Giants should hire, without question, John Harbaugh - And John, a great guy, should TAKE THE JOB!!!"
Quarterback Situations Could Influence Decision
Part of Harbaugh's deliberation may involve assessing the quarterback roster of his potential suitors. In New York, he would inherit the dynamic but sometimes reckless Jaxson Dart. In Tennessee, he would have 2025 draft's top pick, Cam Ward, while the Dolphins offer a clean slate with Tua Tagovailoa departing.
Should Harbaugh choose another destination, the smart money would currently be on Kevin Stefanski, the former Cleveland Browns coach, securing the Giants job. However, Antonio Pierce's compelling interview has dramatically improved his chances, making this a genuine three-horse race.
The Giants are determined to make the right choice, as they aim to build a winning team around Dart for the 2026 season and beyond.
