Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games to Feature Historic Indoor Opening Ceremony

Organisers of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games have revealed that the city's OVO Hydro venue will host what they promise will be an 'unforgettable' opening ceremony. This landmark event, scheduled for July 23, 2026, marks the first time in the history of the Commonwealth Games that an opening ceremony will be staged indoors within an arena setting.

A Clyde-Built Spectacle with Female Creative Leadership

The showpiece ceremony is being designed by a team described as 'incredible female creatives', with a focus on delivering a 'Clyde-built experience for the world, with the story of the city at its heart'. This represents a significant departure from the 2014 Glasgow Games, where the opening ceremony was held at Celtic Park before an audience of 40,000, featuring iconic Scottish elements such as dozens of Scottish terriers, dancing Tunnock's Teacakes, and a giant kilt.

The creative team bringing this vision to life includes Glasgow-based professionals: Roxana Cole as show and staging director, Emily Jane Boyle overseeing choreography, and Carole Millar in charge of costume design. Louisa Mahon, chief marketing officer at Glasgow 2026, emphasised that both the city and Scotland are 'bursting with' creativity, stating: 'We're working with some incredible female creatives to build a ceremony that's bold, unmistakably Glasgow, and unlike anything the Commonwealth Games has produced before.'

Call for 700 Enthusiastic Volunteers

To execute this ambitious ceremony, organisers are now actively seeking 700 'enthusiastic and energetic' volunteers to participate in kicking off the major sporting occasion. These volunteers will help wow the audience inside the 14,500-capacity Hydro venue and the millions watching from home.

The roles required include cast members, representatives from cultural community groups, and athlete volunteer marshals. Participants will have the opportunity to step into the spotlight in a world-class venue, taking part in both live and pre-recorded moments of the show. Specific roles range from symbolic community moments and welcoming the athletes to high-energy dance numbers, scripted performances, and storytelling.

Organisers are encouraging passionate people from all backgrounds to apply, with particular interest in dancers of all types, including 'culturally specific' styles. Importantly, people without any specific skill set are also urged to come forward, as the ceremony aims to showcase the city's diverse local communities and cultures.

Venue Details and Games Background

The OVO Hydro is one of four Games venues in Glasgow and will serve multiple purposes during the event. Following the opening ceremony, it will host the netball competition, where 12 teams will compete for the gold medal.

Dominic McKay, boss of the SEC campus which encompasses the Hydro venue, expressed confidence in the venue's readiness: 'We are ready to lift the curtain and raise the roof on an event which will inspire and capture the imagination of millions.'

The 23rd Commonwealth Games were originally scheduled to take place in Australia, but the state of Victoria withdrew in 2023 due to hosting cost concerns. Glasgow subsequently stepped in, offering to run a streamlined version of the Games that would not require any public funds.

Glasgow 2026 will take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026. In a notable broadcasting change, this will be the first time in 72 years that the BBC will not be showing the Games, with pay-per-view network TNT Sports having secured the exclusive broadcasting rights.
