City go into the match two points behind leaders Arsenal, who host Brighton later in the day. Guardiola's Candid Assessment
Speaking to club media ahead of the trip to the City Ground, the Catalan manager was clear about his ambitions and current assessment. "Well, the best place to be is at the top and still we're not there," Guardiola stated. "I'd prefer to be ten points clear of everyone, but it is what it is."
He acknowledged Arsenal's strong form but emphasised that his team remains firmly in contention across all fronts as 2025 draws to a close. Guardiola also used his pre-match press conference to pay respects to Nottingham Forest legend John Robertson, who passed away this week aged 72. "On behalf of Manchester City, I wanted to give big condolences to Forest especially, his family," he said, recognising Robertson's pivotal role in the club's European Cup triumphs.
He anticipates a challenging fixture, describing Forest away as "one of the toughest places" to visit, especially during the busy festive period. The sentiment echoes Guardiola's recent comments after beating Real Madrid, where he claimed his team was "(far) away" from being ready and that significant improvement was still required.
With key players returning from injury and the season entering a critical phase, Guardiola's public caution serves as a reminder to his squad and a warning to their rivals that Manchester City are building momentum with their sights set firmly on the pinnacle.
