Manchester United's emerging talent Ayden Heaven has openly acknowledged the profound impact of Arsenal defender William Saliba and his current teammate Harry Maguire on his burgeoning career. The 19-year-old centre-back, who made the switch from boyhood club Arsenal to the Red Devils in February 2025 for an undisclosed sum, has rapidly cemented his place as a first-team regular at Old Trafford.
From 'Baby Saliba' to Manchester United Prospect
Heaven, who grew up supporting Arsenal and joined their academy in 2019, earned the affectionate nickname 'baby Saliba' during his formative years at the Emirates Stadium. Despite spending over five years with the Gunners, he made just a single first-team appearance, coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 Carabao Cup victory away to Preston North End last season. On that memorable evening, he partnered directly with Saliba in defence, an experience that proved invaluable for the young Englishman.
Mentorship from Defensive Icons
In a recent in-house interview, Heaven was questioned about the figures who have most influenced his development. "I'd probably say William Saliba or Harry Maguire, one of them two," he responded. "Just having that reassurance [of them] next to you. You're not that afraid when you have got that experience beside you." This dual mentorship spans both his past at Arsenal and his present at Manchester United, highlighting the cross-club respect and learning that defines modern football.
Coaching Support Behind the Scenes
Beyond the pitch, Heaven is benefiting from the guidance of former United defender Jonny Evans, who now serves on interim manager Michael Carrick's coaching staff. "Jonny helped me a lot last season when he was a player," Heaven added. "It is always good to have those senior players, and now that he is a coach it is great to have that past relationship with him. Me and Jonny have a good connection."
Evans is joined by another ex-defender, Jonathan Woodgate, in providing specialised training for Heaven and fellow young defender Leny Yoro. "Me and Leny always do extras with Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans, and we are always learning and helping each other a lot," Heaven explained. "We still have a lot to learn, because we are still very young. The guys help us, and we are always trying to improve."
Season Progress and Future Opportunities
Since Carrick took charge, Heaven has primarily been utilised as a substitute, but he enjoyed a consistent run of starts under previous manager Ruben Amorim before Amorim's dismissal in January. With Harry Maguire suspended for United's upcoming match against Leeds on April 13, Heaven could be in line for his 16th appearance of the season, potentially marking a significant milestone in his development. This opportunity underscores the trust being placed in the youngster as he continues to evolve under the watchful eyes of both teammates and coaches.
