Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes has publicly addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding his future, as the Brazilian continues to be linked with a high-profile move to Manchester United.
Gomes Commits to Wolves' Survival Battle
Despite the swirling transfer rumours, the 24-year-old has issued a fresh statement insisting his immediate focus is solely on helping his current club avoid the drop into the Championship. Gomes has been a standout performer in a difficult season for Wolves, making 23 appearances across all competitions and attracting attention from several top clubs.
In an interview with Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, Gomes emphasised his dedication to the cause at Molineux. "We are working very hard every day to get Wolves out of this situation," he stated. "The season ends in May and there is still a long way to go. We ask the fans to keep believing in us because we are very committed to changing the situation the team is in."
Premier League Dream and Transfer Interest
The midfielder, who joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 and has since made 112 appearances, expressed his love for playing in England's top flight. "It is another dream come true," Gomes said. "The Premier League is the biggest national league in the world. Everything here is sensational, from the level of the games to the atmosphere in the stands."
This admiration for the league underscores why a potential departure would likely only be triggered by relegation. Alongside Manchester United, Italian giants Napoli have also been credited with an interest in securing his services. Gomes remains under contract at Wolves for another three and a half years.
Wolves' Improved Form Under Edwards
The team's recent performances have offered a glimmer of hope in their fight for survival. Under manager Rob Edwards, Wolves are currently on a four-match unbeaten run. This sequence includes a creditable draw at Old Trafford against Manchester United, a first league win of the campaign—a 3-0 victory over West Ham—and a 6-1 thrashing of Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup third round.
Gomes pointed to this improved form as evidence of their underlying quality. "Even before we started this unbeaten run, we were already playing well," he explained. "We conceded a goal in stoppage time against Arsenal in London after a great performance. We knew it was a matter of making adjustments. These four matches without defeat are not a coincidence."
Despite this upturn, Wolves remain entrenched in the relegation zone, making their battle to stay up a tense and critical one. Gomes concluded his remarks with a message for the supporters, highlighting the mutual affection between player and club. "I can only thank everyone who has always trusted me and given me the chance to step onto the pitch to represent Wolves. The affection from the fans is incredible, and I really want to give that back. I will give my life on the pitch so the team can finish the season safe from relegation."
