In a landmark moment for Australian rules football, former Brisbane Lions player Leigh Ryswyk has become the AFL's first openly gay player. The historic announcement was made during an interview on Melbourne radio station Joy 94.9's GayFL program on Wednesday, where Ryswyk shared his journey with listeners.
A Personal Revelation Years in the Making
During the radio interview, Ryswyk explained that while this revelation might surprise some people, his closest friends have known about his sexuality for five years. "To people who know me, my closest friends, this is not new. I've been out for five years now," Ryswyk told the program hosts.
He acknowledged that for many listeners, this would be their first time learning about this aspect of his identity. "There will be people, though, if they do listen to this, it will be the first time they know about this," Ryswyk said, adding that as a private person, he hasn't shared this information widely on social media.
Why Now? 'Why Not?'
When asked about his timing for coming out publicly, Ryswyk responded with a simple yet powerful question: "Why not?" This straightforward approach reflects his desire to live authentically while potentially helping others in similar situations.
In a follow-up Instagram post, Ryswyk elaborated on his personal journey, writing: "For a long time, I kept a big part of who I am to myself. Opening up hasn't been easy, but it's been incredibly freeing."
A Commitment to Creating Inclusive Spaces
Ryswyk expressed his hope that sharing his story might help create more welcoming environments in football. "Footy has given me so much and I want to help make sure it's a space where everyone feels safe to be themselves," he wrote.
He continued with heartfelt words about the potential impact of his announcement: "If sharing my journey helps break down barriers, start conversations, or lets someone know they're not alone, then that means everything to me. I'm proud of who I am, proud to be part of this game and hopeful for what's ahead."
Football Career and Achievements
Originally from Victoria, Ryswyk played one match for the Brisbane Lions in 2005 before embarking on an impressive career with North Adelaide in the SANFL. From 2006 onward, he played 226 games for North Adelaide, contributing significantly to their premiership victory in 2018 before retiring.
Beyond his playing career, Ryswyk has been recognized for his contributions to football with induction into the AFL Queensland Football Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy in the sport.
Support from the Football Community
Ryswyk becomes only the second AFL player to publicly identify as a member of the LGBTIQA community, following former West Coast Eagles star Mitch Brown, who revealed he is bisexual in August last year.
Brown quickly offered his support to Ryswyk, posting on Instagram: "My deepest respect and congratulations to Leigh for sharing this part of himself with the world tonight. What an absolute legend!"
Brown praised Ryswyk's courage, writing: "It takes real courage to step forward and choose to live openly and honestly, especially when you come from environments that haven't always made that easy. This is what bravery looks like."
A Historic Moment for Australian Football
Ryswyk's announcement represents a significant milestone in Australian football history. As the first openly gay AFL player, his decision to share his truth publicly may pave the way for greater inclusivity and acceptance within the sport.
The football community's positive response, exemplified by Brown's supportive message, suggests a growing willingness to embrace diversity in Australian rules football at all levels.
