A promising nursing student from Liverpool took her own life shortly after ending a relationship, an inquest has heard. Lucy de Oliveira, 22, a student at Liverpool John Moores University, was found dead at her student home in Kensington, east Liverpool, on 27 February.
The inquest heard that Lucy had a history of anxiety and depression. She sent a tragic message to her ex-boyfriend before her death, according to a coroner's investigating officer. A forensic pathology registrar confirmed that Lucy died of asphyxiation, but had also overdosed on a large quantity of painkillers.
Area Coroner Anita Bhardwaj concluded that there was no doubt Lucy took her own life. 'Lucy was a bright, intelligent 22-year-old with a medical history of depression and anxiety. It is so tragic - she had a bright future ahead of her,' she said.
Lucy's mother, Liz de Oliveira, 59, paid tribute to her daughter, saying: 'She always put everybody else before herself. It's a tragedy not just for us, but for society as she had so much to give.' Her grandmother, Pam Hussey, 89, added: 'She was the light of our lives.'
