Gary Lineker Accuses Thomas Tuchel of Personal Bias in Trent Alexander-Arnold Snub
Football pundit and former England striker Gary Lineker has sparked controversy by claiming that national team manager Thomas Tuchel's continued exclusion of Trent Alexander-Arnold from the England squad is driven by something "personal." Lineker made these remarks during a recent episode of The Rest is Football podcast, where he expressed bewilderment over the Real Madrid defender's omission.
Alexander-Arnold's England Absence Under Scrutiny
Trent Alexander-Arnold, aged 27, has not featured for England since June 2025, marking his sole appearance under Tuchel's tenure, which began 15 months ago. The latest squad selection has placed Alexander-Arnold behind Reece James, Tino Livramento, Jarell Quansah, and Ben White in the right-back hierarchy. This decision has intensified debates about his international future, especially given his previous deployment in midfield during Euro 2024, where he was dropped by former manager Gareth Southgate after just two matches.
Lineker, a self-professed admirer of Alexander-Arnold, argued that the exclusion defies football logic. "I think there's something personal because football-wise there's no argument," he stated. "I can't see how he can not be in that squad because he has to improve your chances, even if it's from the bench." He speculated that Tuchel might disapprove of aspects such as Alexander-Arnold's attitude or defensive capabilities, though he admitted these were mere guesses.
Lineker Labels Tuchel's Decision as 'Insulting'
In a pointed critique, Lineker asserted that players like Ben White, who was called up as a replacement for the injured Quansah this month, "are not in the same league as Alexander-Arnold." He emphasized Alexander-Arnold's unique ability to unlock defenses with his technical skill, describing Tuchel's actions as "really insulting" to a top-tier full-back. Lineker also referenced White's past reluctance to play for England, noting that while he wouldn't judge White without knowing the full context, it further complicated the selection rationale.
"So it doesn't make sense to me," Lineker continued. "I don't know whether it's his attitude or whatever it is, I don't know. But I find it also quite insulting bringing players in." He concluded by reiterating his view that Alexander-Arnold's talent should warrant automatic inclusion, questioning the manager's judgment.
Tuchel's Response and Tactical Justification
At a press conference ahead of England's 1-1 draw with Uruguay, Tuchel addressed Alexander-Arnold's recent social media post, where the player shared "Madrid and nothing more" on Instagram after a victory with Real Madrid. When asked if this was a reaction to his squad omission, Tuchel replied, "Well, fair enough, fair enough. I think it is a very hard decision that we took. No doubt about his talent, no doubt about his career, and what he can give to teams."
Tuchel explained that the team had developed a different tactical model during Alexander-Arnold's absence in previous months, focusing on intensity and specific right-back profiles involving overlaps and underlaps. "It was a slightly different profile of players in camp who performed so well. We just stick to these guys," he added, defending his selection based on recent performances and team dynamics.
The ongoing saga highlights the intense scrutiny surrounding England squad selections, with Lineker's comments adding fuel to the fire over Alexander-Arnold's international future. As debates rage on social media and among fans, the pressure mounts on Tuchel to justify his choices ahead of future fixtures.
