Liverpool's Fixture Advantage Over PSG in Champions League Quarter-Final
Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly unlikely to secure a postponement for their Ligue 1 fixture against Lens between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final clash with Liverpool. This situation contrasts sharply with their previous round, where a rescheduled match provided a significant rest advantage against Chelsea.
PSG's Previous Advantage Against Chelsea
In the Champions League last 16, PSG benefited from having their Ligue 1 match against Nantes postponed, granting them five days of rest between both legs against Chelsea. Originally scheduled for the weekend of March 13-15, sandwiched between their European fixtures on March 11 and March 17, the Nantes match was moved to April 22.
This decision allowed Luis Enrique's side to focus entirely on their knockout tie against Liam Rosenior's Chelsea, resulting in an emphatic 8-2 aggregate victory. Many observers questioned whether PSG would receive similar accommodations for their upcoming quarter-final against Liverpool.
No Postponement Expected Against Lens
French football expert Matt Spiro indicates that PSG will not enjoy the same privilege this time. Lens, who are title contenders in Ligue 1, are not expected to entertain any requests for postponement. Spiro suggests the fixture will remain in its current slot, as no alternative arrangement would 'make sense' for Lens.
PSG currently lead the French league table by a single point, with a game in hand over second-placed Lens. The scheduled match against Lens on April 11 falls between the two legs of the Champions League quarter-final, with the first leg in Paris on April 8 and the second leg at Anfield on April 15.
Liverpool's Momentum and Challenges
Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals with a commanding 4-0 victory over Galatasaray on Wednesday evening, securing a 4-1 aggregate win. However, they face a challenging FA Cup quarter-final away at Manchester City just four days before the first leg against PSG.
Despite this tight schedule, Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed confidence and relish at the prospect of facing PSG, a team that eliminated Liverpool on penalties in the last 16 last season. Slot described last season's encounter as "the best game I've managed in my career," praising the quality of football from both sides.
Historical Context and Confidence
Slot highlighted that Liverpool were the only team to take PSG to extra-time and penalties last season, demonstrating their competitive edge. He noted that PSG have maintained their high level this season, while Liverpool have shown they can perform at a similar standard, as evidenced by their recent European displays.
However, Slot tempered expectations by acknowledging that replicating such high-performance metrics, like the 5.02 expected goals (xG) and conceding only 0.18 xG in a match, is exceptionally difficult. This fixture advantage could prove crucial in a tightly contested tie, offering Liverpool a potential edge in preparation and rest compared to their French opponents.
