Manchester United's efforts to overhaul their youth recruitment structure have been dealt a significant blow, with a key target opting to stay with a Premier League rival.
Midgley Turns Down United Offer
Paul Midgley, the highly-regarded head of youth recruitment at Newcastle United, has rejected an offer to take on a similar role at Manchester United. The 38-year-old held talks with the Old Trafford hierarchy last month and had emerged as the preferred candidate after a series of interviews.
It is understood that Midgley, who previously worked with United's new sporting director Jason Wilcox at Manchester City, has informed staff at St James' Park of his decision to remain on Tyneside. His choice means United must now restart what had been an extensive search process.
Search for Fedorenko's Replacement Continues
The club had identified Midgley as the man to replace Luke Fedorenko, who is currently on leave and preparing to depart Carrington for a new role with an agency. Before Midgley became the frontrunner, United's search had involved serious discussions with around ten other candidates.
Midgley joined Newcastle from Manchester City three years ago, where he served as UK scouting director. At City, his colleagues included not only Wilcox but also Stephen Torpey, who is now United's head of academy.
Newcastle's Project Proves Too Persuasive
The decision to snub United follows positive discussions Midgley held with Newcastle's sporting director Ross Wilson, academy manager Steve Harper, and head of recruitment Steve Nickson. A key factor was his belief that it was not the right time to leave a project with considerable potential.
Newcastle's Saudi owners have plans to invest significantly in the club's academy infrastructure by 2026, and Midgley is keen to be part of that development. Furthermore, his relationship with Nickson, whom he considers one of the best operators in the industry, was pivotal. He values the opportunity to continue working and learning under Nickson's guidance.
This setback for United's hierarchy comes during a difficult period, following the recent dismissal of head coach Rubén Amorim amid reported tensions with Jason Wilcox. The club must now go back to the drawing board in their quest to strengthen their youth recruitment department.
