Manchester United are on the verge of officially announcing Michael Carrick as their interim head coach until the season's end. The club has reached an agreement in principle with the former midfielder and his chosen backroom staff, with final details now being ironed out.
Deal Finalised Following Face-to-Face Talks
An announcement confirming Carrick's return to Old Trafford could come as early as Tuesday, 13th January 2026. The 44-year-old emerged as the preferred candidate after productive discussions with chief executive Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox last Thursday. Further talks were held on Monday to settle the specifics, including the composition of his coaching team.
This swift move follows the sudden departure of previous manager Ruben Amorim and his entire Portuguese coaching staff, which left a significant gap in the club's senior setup. The first-team squad had Tuesday off, with Carrick and his staff expected to take their first training session on Wednesday.
Immediate Derby Challenge Awaits
Should the appointment be confirmed imminently, Carrick's first match in charge will be a baptism of fire: the Manchester derby against City this Saturday. This will not be his first stint in the United dugout; he previously took temporary control for three matches in November 2021 following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal.
During that brief spell, he steered the team to impressive victories over Villarreal and Arsenal, as well as a draw away at Chelsea, before departing ahead of Ralf Rangnick's arrival.
From Teesside Back to Old Trafford
Carrick subsequently built his managerial reputation at Middlesbrough, where he spent two-and-a-half years as the permanent boss. He led the Championship side to the play-offs in the 2022-23 season, but was dismissed in June 2025 after a 10th-place finish.
United also held conversations with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about the interim role over the weekend, but ultimately moved forward with Carrick, who impressed the hierarchy with his vision for the team during negotiations.
The club now turns to a familiar face to steady the ship for the remainder of the campaign, hoping his knowledge of the club can provide immediate stability.
