Manchester United have confirmed the return of club legend Michael Carrick, appointing him as their interim head coach until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
A Familiar Face Returns to Old Trafford
The 44-year-old former Manchester United midfielder, captain, and first-team coach steps back into the hotseat at Old Trafford. His appointment follows the dismissal of Ruben Amorim last Monday, which brought an acrimonious end to the Portuguese manager's 14-month reign.
Carrick was the unanimous choice of the club's hierarchy, having impressed chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox during the selection process. He was selected ahead of other candidates, including former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and ex-striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Carrick's Immediate Challenge and Long-Term View
Carrick's second stint as caretaker boss begins with the formidable task of leading United in the Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford this Saturday. He previously held the role briefly in November 2021 following Solskjaer's departure.
In a statement, Carrick said: "I know what it takes to succeed here. My focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club." He added that he has total belief in the squad's talent and dedication, with the aim of pulling everyone together for the fans.
The club's decision to appoint a coach with deep institutional knowledge is designed to ensure a smooth transition for the remainder of the campaign. Interim football director Darren Fletcher stated on Sunday that the club's ambition for the season is Champions League qualification, a target Carrick is now tasked with pursuing.
Planning for the Future
This interim arrangement also provides Jason Wilcox with the necessary time to conduct a thorough search for Amorim's permanent long-term successor. Wilcox praised Carrick, stating: "Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United. He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season."
Carrick, who made 464 appearances for the club as a player, now has a crucial few months to stabilise the team and chase crucial points in the Premier League table.
