Portishead Town FC, a non-league football club near Bristol, have been dealt a devastating blow by the Football Association (FA), who have relegated the team from Step 4 to Step 5 despite a successful season on the pitch. The club finished runners-up in the Southern League Division 1 South and were favourites to secure promotion through the play-offs. Instead, the FA ruled that their Bristol Road ground fails to meet required standards, removing them from the play-offs and relegating them to the Western League.
Ground Grading Dispute
The FA's decision stems from ground grading failures at Portishead Town's home ground. The club had been informed that new spectator stands and other improvements were needed to meet Southern League standards. Portishead Town claimed they had an extension until July 2026 to complete the work, but the FA revoked this, citing a March 31 deadline. The club stated that stands were ordered and constructed but could not be installed due to unresolved health and safety issues beyond their control.
In a strongly-worded statement, the club accused the FA of misleading them. "Throughout this process, the club followed every instruction provided by FA advisors, who encouraged us to 'get the small things done' and 'apply for an extension'. We were never advised that our progress was insufficient," the statement read. The club also noted that of ten other clubs with ground grading issues, eight were granted extensions, while the remaining two were already relegated, rendering the comparison moot.
Appeal Rejected
Portishead Town lodged an appeal, which was heard on Monday, April 27, but was ultimately rejected. The club expressed devastation, stating, "This relegation follows a decision by the FA to revoke a previously granted extension until 31st July 2026. This revocation stems from ground grading concerns relating to stands not being installed by the end of March 2026." The club insisted they had plans in place to complete all necessary works by July 2026, funded by the club and local community.
The FA contested the club's version of events, stating that the extension only related to dressing room improvements, not the infrastructure and new stands. An FA spokesperson said, "We can confirm that Portishead Town have been relegated to Step 5. This follows extensive engagement with the club on the stadium requirements for clubs competing in Step 4, which Portishead Town were unable to comply with in the required timeframe." The FA added that its regulations specify that failure to attain the relevant grade by March 31 results in relegation.
Impact on Play-Offs
The ruling has thrown the promotion play-offs into disarray, with sixth-placed Bishops Cleeve now replacing Portishead Town against Malvern Town. Willand Rovers, who had believed they were facing relegation, have been handed a lifeline as Portishead Town take their place. The Southern League released a statement confirming the change without mentioning Portishead Town, simply noting that "the appeal concerning a regulatory matter has been concluded."
Portishead Town's rise through the leagues has been meteoric, with consecutive promotions from the Western League Division One in 2024 and the Western League Premier Division in 2025. The club had anticipated competing for a third straight promotion this season. Now, they must rebuild from Step 5, with a commitment to return stronger. "To our players, management, volunteers, and supporters: we are deeply sorry. You give everything to this club and this community, and you deserved better. We will fight on. We will meet the standards required. And we will be back," the club said.
