Barcelona appear to have made a definitive decision regarding the future of Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford, with reports indicating the Spanish giants will not make his temporary move permanent. The 28-year-old forward has spent the season at the Camp Nou, but now seems destined to return to Old Trafford in the summer.
Barcelona's Stance on Rashford
The Catalan club holds an option to secure Rashford on a permanent basis for approximately £26 million when the summer transfer window opens. However, reports suggest they have unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a reduced fee with United. According to Spanish outlet SPORT, manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco have agreed that the total cost—including the transfer fee and wages—is deemed 'too high'.
Following a promising start to his loan spell, Rashford has fallen out of favour in the starting eleven, featuring in just two of the last eight La Liga fixtures. Across 44 appearances in all competitions this season, he has netted 12 goals and provided 13 assists.
Return to Manchester United
The decision not to sign Rashford permanently is described as 'practically final', with Barcelona exploring alternative options at a 'much more affordable price'. This leaves United facing a significant choice: either reintegrate the 28-year-old into the first-team squad for the 2026/27 campaign or seek to offload him to another club.
Rashford remains under contract at United until 2028 and is reportedly 'open' to a return. He burst onto the scene at Old Trafford during the 2015/16 season, netting eight times in 18 appearances. In total, he has scored 138 goals in 426 outings for the club.
Club's Reluctance
However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reluctant to have Rashford back on the books, and the club currently has no intention of reintegrating the player—even if Michael Carrick remains as head coach. Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, scoring four times and registering 16 assists in 17 appearances.
Speaking about Rashford's future earlier this month, Flick remained non-committal: "I'm very happy with Marcus. He has shown his quality, and he scored an important goal. I can't say anything about his future; we have to focus on the matches until the end of the season."
