Rock League Launches as Curling's Bold New Professional Venture
The world of curling is set for a dramatic transformation with the launch of Rock League, the sport's first professional league, which promises to blend athletic competition with high-octane entertainment. Inspired by formats like cricket's The Hundred and the spectacle of darts, this innovative venture will premiere in Toronto, backed by a trio of NFL stars as investors.
A New Era for Curling with Star-Studded Support
Rock League represents a significant shift for curling, traditionally seen as a genteel winter sport. Its founders have drawn inspiration from diverse sources including golf, darts, and even WWE wrestling to create a condensed, fan-friendly tournament. The inaugural event will feature live music, dramatic athlete walk-outs, innovative game formats, spectators in fancy dress, and an on-ice spectator bar, aiming to attract both dedicated fans and curious newcomers.
Scottish world champion Bruce Mouat, who will captain the Northern United franchise, enthusiastically embraces this new direction. "I think curling has had a lot of tradition in its past, and we still hold on to that at some points," Mouat told the Press Association. "But I don't think we should shy away from having pyrotechnics and a good time. As the sport evolves we need to evolve with it."
Financial Incentives and Global Competition
The league addresses a critical issue for curlers: financial sustainability. Athletes will receive participation fees in addition to competing for a substantial $250,000 (£189,000) prize pot. Mouat admitted this development "wasn't necessarily something I thought was going to happen in my career lifespan," highlighting the league's potential to provide a rare income stream for professional curlers.
The first season will see six mixed-nationality franchises from Europe, Canada, the United States, and the Asia-Pacific region converge on Toronto for a multi-format week of competition. Unusually for curling, the tournament will include mixed fours events, adding another layer of innovation to the traditional sport.
Controversy and Publicity: The 'Boopgate' Effect
Curling has recently enjoyed increased visibility, particularly following the 'Boopgate' incident at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, where a heated clash between Canadian and Swedish teams—complete with an expletive caught on a hot microphone—sparked global attention. Mouat, who skipped the British men to Olympic silver in Italy, noted: "That moment brought a lot of eyes to our sport, and they say no publicity is bad publicity. We've seen a massive influx of people looking at our sport because of that situation."
He added that the incident became "quite a meme-able moment for curling," demonstrating how modern sports narratives can engage new audiences. "You have to have a bit of a laugh. As much as it was intense in the moment, I think it's now a bit of a funny story for a lot of the curlers."
NFL Investment and Embracing the Villain Role
Rock League's early investors include prominent NFL figures: tight ends George Kittle and TJ Hockenson, along with Hall of Fame defensive end Jared Allen. Their involvement signals confidence in the league's commercial potential and appeal beyond traditional curling circles.
Founder Nic Sulsky, who also owns parent company The Curling Group, is prepared to face criticism from purists resistant to change. "Sport needs villains," he told the Press Association. "If I have to play that role in the early days, that's cool. You can't dislike what we're doing and the change we're trying to bring into the sport and at the same time, loving the curlers who are supporting what we're doing."
Sulsky emphasised the league's core mission: "You can't love curling without respecting the fact that curlers should be paid more money." This statement underscores Rock League's dual purpose of enhancing entertainment value while improving financial prospects for athletes.
As curling enters this exciting new chapter, Rock League aims to balance respect for tradition with bold innovation, potentially reshaping how the sport is perceived and consumed worldwide.
