Cristian Romero Pledges 200% Effort in Tottenham's Relegation Struggle
Cristian Romero has vowed to give 200% effort in Tottenham Hotspur's remaining seven matches, described as "finals," as the club fights to avoid a historic Premier League relegation. This commitment comes after a devastating 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, which dropped Spurs to 17th in the table, intensifying fears of their first demotion since 1977.
Spurs' Survival Hopes Dim After Demoralising Defeat
Tottenham's survival prospects suffered a severe blow with the defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The loss extends their winless league run to 13 matches, despite a raucous pre-match welcome from approximately 10,000 fans who flooded the High Road to support the team bus. Initially, this optimism translated into a positive first half, with chances from Richarlison and a near-miss from Forest's Igor Jesus, but the momentum shifted when Jesus scored just before halftime.
After the break, Spurs collapsed, conceding goals to Morgan Gibbs-White in the 62nd minute and Taiwo Awoniyi in the 87th minute, leading to a mass exodus of supporters before full-time. This marked Tottenham's 10th home league loss this season, erasing much of the pre-match goodwill.
Romero's Rallying Cry to Fans and Teammates
In a post-match interview with SpursPlay, Romero expressed gratitude to the fans while acknowledging the team's shortcomings. "It's a difficult day for everyone, but the first thing is to speak about the fans. Thank you for today and always staying with us," he said. "They gave us fantastic support, but about us, it's a bad day. Now it is finished and the most important thing is to understand the situation."
Romero emphasised unity and responsibility, stating, "It's not easy but the most important thing is to get to national team, and back here for the last seven finals. I promise [to] put 200% in every one and for me it is not easy, but we have to stay all together. It's a bad day yeah, but we will go again." He added that he takes personal accountability, urging the squad to deliver more in the crucial upcoming fixtures.
Context and Upcoming Challenges
The defeat overshadowed recent positive results, including a spirited draw at Liverpool and a 3-2 win over Atlético Madrid, which had briefly raised hopes of a turnaround. Looking ahead, Tottenham face a critical home match against Brighton on 18 April, with fan groups planning further support initiatives to boost morale.
Romero concluded, "It's incredible and especially in this moment, after this season is no good. Honestly I'm the first to take responsibility, but the fans thank you. Thank you every game, the support is brilliant and it's only (now) about the players, the staff and we need [to give] more, especially me the first, but the last seven finals we will go again." As the relegation battle intensifies, Tottenham's fate hinges on these final games, with Romero's pledge highlighting the team's determination to survive.
