Chelsea Boss Rosenior Dejected After 'Most Disappointing Evening' at Everton
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has openly expressed his pain following what he termed "the most disappointing evening so far" after his side suffered a comprehensive 3-0 defeat away to Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The loss marks a particularly chastening period for the Blues, who have now endured four defeats in just ten days.
A Brutal Run of Results for Chelsea
The visitors were thoroughly outplayed and outmaneuvered by a vibrant Everton side, with the stadium witnessing arguably its finest performance since its inauguration. This dismal run for Chelsea included an 8-2 aggregate humiliation at the hands of Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Rosenior searching for minor consolations.
"It's a disappointing time for the club at the moment in terms of the way we lost in the Champions League and the way we've lost the last two games," Rosenior stated, acknowledging the respite offered by the upcoming international break. "My job, it hurts. Regardless of your position, it hurts to lose games of football."
He elaborated on the Everton fixture, saying, "Yeah, the most disappointing evening so far in terms of the things we've spoken about, not gifting goals away and making sure we're in the game, getting control of the game. It wasn't there and it turned into a really difficult evening where the result and performance was nowhere near what we expected or wanted."
Rosenior Clings to Top-Four Hope Amidst Crisis
Despite the bleak outlook, Rosenior pointed to a slender silver lining, noting that Chelsea remain just one point adrift of a Champions League qualification spot after rivals Manchester United and Liverpool also dropped points. "In terms of moving forward we're one point away from the Champions League position. We need to keep working in this way," he asserted, attempting to rally his squad.
Everton's European Dream Alive Under Moyes
Conversely, Everton manager David Moyes is buoyant after his team secured their first back-to-back home league victories this season. Goals from Beto, who netted twice, and a spectacular strike from Iliman Ndiaye sealed the win, propelling the Toffees to within three points of fifth-placed Liverpool—a position likely to yield Champions League football next term.
"I'd love to say it was (a possibility) as I'm trying to be more positive than I would normally be, but for Everton to even be in the mix for Europe is unbelievable, whether it is Conference League or Champions League," Moyes marveled, reflecting on the club's dramatic turnaround.
He highlighted the stark contrast from last season's relegation battle, financial constraints, and player contract issues. "We were sitting here last year just beginning to edge ourselves away from relegation and still had lots of money to pay off, new ownership and 10 or 12 players out of contract so for us to be in the position we are now is just great."
Moyes added, "I can imagine, if we could possibly do it, what it would do for the crowds here as Evertonians are desperate to get back amongst it."
Moyes Praises Performance and Acknowledges Chelsea's Fatigue
On the match itself, Moyes credited goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for crucial saves but insisted his side deserved the victory. "Our goalkeeper made a couple of wonderful saves which could have changed the game, but I think it is hard to say we didn't deserve to win that game."
He also suggested Chelsea's midweek Champions League exertions may have played a role, stating, "Chelsea were playing in the last 16 of the Champions League so the level they have got is good, we may have just caught them [after] playing in midweek and got an advantage from that."
