Roy Keane Backs Eddie Howe for Man Utd Manager Role Over Michael Carrick
Roy Keane Wants Eddie Howe as Man Utd Manager, Not Carrick

Roy Keane Advocates for Eddie Howe as Manchester United's Next Manager

Ex-Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has openly expressed his preference for Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe to take over the permanent managerial role at Old Trafford, casting doubt on interim boss Michael Carrick's long-term suitability. Keane's comments come despite Carrick's impressive run since stepping in after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in mid-January.

Carrick's Interim Success and Keane's Skepticism

Michael Carrick, the former United midfielder, has overseen a remarkable turnaround, guiding the team to third place in the Premier League and putting them in a strong position to secure Champions League qualification. Under his interim leadership, United have recorded seven wins, two draws, and only one defeat from ten matches, including a recent 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.

However, Keane remains unconvinced. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he argued that Carrick lacks the necessary experience for the permanent role, stating, "I think there are better options out there." He praised Carrick's simplified approach and good timing but emphasized that managing United requires proven success in winning trophies and competing in Europe, areas where Carrick has yet to prove himself.

Keane's Endorsement of Eddie Howe

Keane has consistently backed Eddie Howe, highlighting his attributes as an ideal candidate. Speaking on Sky Sports in January, Keane said, "I'd go with Eddie Howe. I like him. I like what he's done. He's managed a lot of games. When his teams are at it, they'll play good football." He praised Howe's calm demeanor, noting that United could benefit from such stability after previous emotional appointments.

Keane also pointed to Howe's achievements at Newcastle, including securing Champions League football and winning a cup, as evidence of his capability. He added, "He's managed seven or 800 games. He's still a young man. I love his calmness. Maybe Man Utd need a little bit of that."

Challenges in Securing Howe

Eddie Howe is currently under contract with Newcastle United, earning approximately £6 million annually with at least three years remaining on his deal. Any move to lure him away would likely require a substantial eight-figure compensation fee. In October 2025, Howe reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle, stating, "I'm all in. My commitment here is 100 per cent here and always has been."

Despite this, Keane's advocacy keeps Howe in the spotlight as a potential successor, contrasting with Carrick's interim success. Keane concluded, "So everyone else can get giddy about Man United being third in the league but I don't. I get excited when teams are winning trophies and competing week in, week out."
