Bukayo Saka has raised eyebrows by naming former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil as his best-ever teammate, snubbing current stars Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. The 24-year-old winger, now the longest-serving player in Mikel Arteta's squad, chose the German playmaker over any current Gunners colleague.
Saka's Surprising Choice
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily, Saka said of Ozil: "High quality player. Fun to play with him, fun to watch him." The England international only played alongside Ozil for about 18 months before the midfielder's contract was terminated in January 2021, but the impression left was lasting.
Ozil's Legacy at Arsenal
Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 and became a fan favorite, winning four FA Cups during his tenure. However, his time ended bitterly after being frozen out by Arteta. Despite this, Saka has previously praised Ozil, telling Football Focus in 2023: "He plays in his own world. Some of the things he does, and you look at him, just wow."
Only a few current Arsenal players, including Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, and Gabriel Magalhaes, shared the pitch with Ozil. Saka's admiration highlights the impact Ozil had on the club's younger talents.
Current Season Context
This season, Arsenal are mounting a strong Premier League title challenge, with Rice a contender for PFA Player of the Year. Saka's choice may surprise some, but it underscores the enduring influence of Ozil's creativity and skill.
