Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has launched a blistering attack on current manager Ruben Amorim, describing his treatment of young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo as 'bulls***' and even suggesting the homegrown talent should consider leaving Old Trafford.
Scholes' Explosive Social Media Outburst
The 51-year-old United legend took to Instagram to vent his fury after Amorim once again left Mainoo on the bench during Thursday night's 1-0 lead over West Ham. Scholes' ire was directed at Amorim's recent claim that he views Mainoo as a starter, despite the player's severe lack of minutes.
'The kid is being ruined, not being played in a team that can't control a game of football,' Scholes posted. 'Hate seeing home grown players leave but it's probably best for him now, enough is enough.'
Amorim's Comments Versus His Actions
The controversy stems from comments made by Amorim just last Friday, where he insisted he considered Mainoo 'a starter just like the other players'. He defended his selection policy by comparing it to Casemiro's situation, stating his sole focus was on winning games.
However, his actions have told a different story. During the West Ham match, with United trying to protect a narrow lead, Amorim brought on Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro and Lisandro Martinez. Mainoo remained an unused substitute, watching as United conceded a late goal.
When questioned post-match about his defensively-minded changes, Amorim said he was concerned about losing second balls. A reporter then suggested Mainoo as a more attacking option, to which the United boss responded with a laugh.
Mainoo's Frustrating Season and Uncertain Future
The 20-year-old midfielder, who enjoyed a spectacular breakthrough campaign two seasons ago, has been relegated to a bit-part role this term. He has managed just 171 minutes of Premier League football, with his only start coming in August's shock Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.
His most recent appearance was as a last-gasp, injury-time substitute in the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, where he was visibly displeased with the late call. Scholes' view that Mainoo should seek a new club appears to be shared by a significant section of the United fanbase, who are desperate to see their academy product given a proper chance.
This sentiment is reflected in the transfer market, with Serie A champions Napoli reportedly showing a renewed interest. The Italian giants were linked with a move last summer and are now said to be considering a January bid for the frustrated young Englishman.
