The future of Arne Slot at Liverpool has sparked a heated debate between football pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, with their opinions sharply divided on whether the Dutch manager should retain his position after a challenging season.
Shearer's Champions League Ultimatum
Alan Shearer has issued a stark warning to Arne Slot, suggesting that the Liverpool manager might need to secure the Champions League trophy to safeguard his job. This comes as Liverpool endure a disastrous Premier League title defence, compounded by a humiliating 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City.
Shearer emphasised the critical nature of Liverpool's upcoming Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain, noting that winning Europe's premier competition could be their only route into next season's tournament due to erratic domestic form.
On The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer stated: "It's crazy, especially after what they did last season and the money they have spent. It just hasn't worked for them, they've been all over the place, they've been so inconsistent." He added, "He has to get in the Champions League via winning it. I'm not even sure top five would be enough, but it's not nice to see what's going on at Liverpool."
Richards' Call for Patience
In contrast, Micah Richards has urged Liverpool to grant Slot another campaign, citing last season's Premier League title win and mitigating circumstances. Richards highlighted issues such as the absence of a main striker, a death within the club involving Diogo Jota, contract sagas, and the ongoing Mohamed Salah situation.
Richards argued: "I'd like to see him get one more season. This season has been, I don't want to say a transition and I know a lot of people will say 'Hold on, he's spent a lot of money.' But their main striker has been out, they've had a death within the club with Jota, the whole thing with getting players over the line with contracts, the saga with Salah, nothing has been straight forward."
He proposed giving Slot another pre-season, with a review by Christmas if performance does not improve, stating: "He's a manager who has won the Premier League, let's not forget, just last season."
Liverpool's Precarious Position
Liverpool currently occupy fifth place in the Premier League, with the battle for top-five spots intensely competitive. Only five points separate Liverpool from ninth-placed Fulham, as Chelsea, Brentford, and Everton threaten to capitalise on any slip-ups.

Shearer remained unconvinced by Richards' arguments, responding: "That in itself is a thing that he won the league but he's miles behind this year after spending that much money. I understand what you are saying in terms of the circumstances. But you're talking about Liverpool football club for winning and spending a fortune. They might not even finish in the top five. That's why they have to get through in the Champions League."
